The first meeting between the two heavyweights came in September last year and Usyk came out on top, winning via unanimous decision and handing Joshua his second ever defeat as a professional. Usyk’s win put any chance chance of an all-British clash between Joshua and Tyson Fury on hold and, with the latter recently announcing his retirement, any future bout between the two remains in doubt.

A win for Joshua against Usyk this weekend could entice Fury into one more big clash to unify the heavyweight belts, while also putting an end to the debate over who the better British boxer is.

This isn’t the first rematch Joshua has taken after a defeat, and coincidentally the other one was also held in Saudi Arabia. Back in June 2019 Joshua took on Andy Ruiz at Madison Square Garden in New York for the IBF, IBO, WBA and WBO titles, of which the Brit was defending champion. Everyone expected Joshua to continue his unbeaten run but Ruiz caused a shock and beat the champ by TKO, knocking Joshua down four times in total before the referee stopped the fight.

Later that year, in Diriyah, Joshua managed to get his revenge. While it wasn’t a knockout or TKO, Joshua did eventually get the better of Ruiz across the 12 rounds to win by unanimous decision.
