Joshua will take on WBO mandatory challenger Usyk after his planned world heavyweight unification fight with Tyson Fury – billed as one of the biggest fights in British boxing history – fell through following months of negotiations earlier this year.
The London fight pits two 2012 gold medallists together in the city where both achieved Olympic glory, with around 60,000 spectators expected as Tottenham’s home debuts as a boxing venue.
Cruserweight king Usyk is relatively inexperienced in the heavyweight division, beating American Chazz Witherspoon and Brit Derek Chisora since stepping up in 2019. But Joshua has praised the Ukrainian for putting his perfect record on the line for a shot at the biggest prizes in the sport.
He said ahead of the fight: “Usyk’s fought two heavyweights, he’s jumping in at the deep end early on.
“But good luck to him, he must believe in himself. He wants to be at the top end early. It’s better to swim deep – get in there and get on with it – rather than tread water.
“You could still end up drowning anyway. You could still get caught in a current and drown. You might as well jump in the deep end and try to survive.”
