Gauff shot to worldwide fame in 2019 after reaching the fourth round of Wimbledon as a qualifier aged just 15, being Venus Williams along the way and only losing to eventual champion Simona Halep. Three years on she will return as the world no. 13 and her preparation has been going well, recently reaching the French Open final before losing to Iga Swiatek.

But now on grass, Gauff will be looking to get off to a good start in the German Open against compatriot Ann Li. Gauff is taking part in the German Open for the first time, missing last year’s tournament which was the first for 13 years and the first on a grass court.

Ann Li was part of the relaunched tournament, and entered as a qualifier but her campaign was brief as she was beaten 6-4, 7-6 (2) in the first qualifying round by Jule Niemeier. This time around, Li didn’t need qualifying but did come through unseeded, setting her up against seventh-seed Gauff.

Like Gauff, Li is one of the young stars of the United States but her preparation for the German Open was less than ideal as the 21-year-old, having to retire injured at the French Open before going out of the Libema Open in the second round.

Prediction: Coco Gauff to win in two sets
