It’s been far too long since tennis fans watching Murray lift a trophy but the wait could finally come to an end in Germany. Stanislas Wawrinka was the opponent the last time Murray won a title, beaten n the 2019 European Open in Antwerp before the Scot succumbed to various injury problems.
Murray entered the Stuttgart Open unseeded and in the first round, making pretty light work of qualifier Christopher O’Connell with a 6-4, 6-3 victory and more of the same followed in the second round, as the Scot beat Alexander Bublik 6-3, 7-6 (4). But the real test of Murray’s level pre-Wimbledon came in the quarter-finals and semi-finals, tests he passed with flying colours. First he beat world number five Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets, 7-6 (3), 6-3, and then dispatched of Nick Kyrgios 7-6 (5), 6-2. He’s almost there.
On the other side of this tie though, Berrettini will be looking to secure his second Stuttgart Open crown, having previously won the tournament in 2019 when he beat Felix Auger-Aliassime in the final. As one of the top seeds for the tournament, Berrettini earned a bye to the second round where he was put against qualifier Radu Albot, needing three sets to eventually win 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.
It was a similar case in the quarter-final against sixth-seed Lorenzo Sonego, only this time Berrettini had to come from behind against his compatriot to take the match 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. And although his semi-final win over Oscar Otte was achieved in two sets, it was an extremely close contest as Berrettini scraped a 7-6 (7), 7-6 (5) victory – two extremely close tie breaks so just how far the Italian was pushed.
Prediction: Andy Murray to win in three sets
