We’re now at the semi-final stage of the 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters and it’s hard to predict who the winner will be. Andrey Rublev is the highest seed left in the tournament, coming in at no.5, and he’ll be hoping to win the Monte-Carlo Masters having been runner-up in 2021. Still yet to win an ATP 1000 title, Rublev has also lost in the Dubai Tennis Championships (ATP 500) final this year, then beaten by Daniil Medvedev.
Given a bye to the second round owing to his seeded standing, Rublev started the tournament having to come from a set down to beat Jaume Munar, but things have been a lot smoother since. A straight set victory over Karen Khachanov followed while, in the quarter-finals, it was a 6-1, 7-6 (5) win over qualifier Jan-Lennard Struff.
Unlike Rublev, Fritz has tasted success in an ATP 1000 tournament, winning the 2022 Indian Wells Masters, though he was unable to defend his crown this year, losing in the quarter-finals. There was another quarter-final exit in the Miami Open, but the American has gone one further in Monte-Carlo.
Fritz was also given a bye to the second round of the Monte-Carlo Masters as the eight seed, and he has been made to work hard for his spot in the final four. First, the American beat Stan Wawrinka before having to come from a set down to knock out Jiri Lehecka. In the quarter-finals, Fritz had a tough draw against second seed Stefanos Tsitsipas but did make light work of the Greek, winning 6-2, 6-4.
