Dominic Thiem was the 2020 US Open champion, but has been beset by real physical problems and the recovery from those problems has not been straightforward for the big Austrian. Thiem’s 2022 form improved as the year went on but his only action ahead of this match was a chastening defeat in qualifying at Adelaide by Soon Woo Kwon.
It couldn’t have been a much worse draw for Thiem either as Rublev won another four ATP titles in 2022 and has won the last three against Thiem in their head-to-head. This includes two matches from 2020 when Thiem was in top form, so Rublev clearly has a game that can defeat the best version of Thiem, never mind this 2023 version.
It would be great to see the flourishing backhand and powerful serve of Thiem ready to go here, and there may well be a set or two where we do see that. However, it is difficult to envisage a return to top form for the Austrian and Rublev is too consistent to allow that to happen as well.
