Manchester United have released a farewell video for Ander Herrera, with a sneaky appearance from Liverpool legend, Steven Gerrard.

The Spanish midfielder has failed to agree on a new deal at Old Trafford and with his current contract up at the end of this season, his departure has now been confirmed with the club’s video.

Why is Ander Herrera leaving Man Utd? Five things to know:

  1. Ander Herrera’s Man United contract expires this summer.
  2. The former Athletic Bilbao midfielder is yet to confirm his next club…
  3. …but he is heavily expected to join PSG.
  4. Reports say Herrera made unsuccessful wage demands of £200,000 per week to renew with United.
  5. Which would be a 150% increase on his current salary of £80,000

The video hears Herrera thanking the club and its fans for these five ‘amazing’ years while showing a montage of clips from his time in Manchester.

And one of those clips, 14 seconds in, shows Gerrard’s stamp on Herrera during the England man’s final appearance against Manchester United in March 2015, earning him a red card.

The clip is accompanied by Herrera’s quote: “A club with thousands of fans that respect and remember all the players who give everything.”

Large sections of the United fanbase are disappointed with Herrera’s expected departure, with many of them affectionately labelling him the ‘people’s captain’. However, the former Athletic Bilbao midfielder’s £200,000 wage demands – up from his current £80,000 per week deal – were too much in the club’s eyes.

Although Herrera’s next destination is yet to be revealed, it is widely expected he will join French champions, Paris Saint-Germain in the summer.

The 29-year-old has won FA Cup, League Cup and Europa League titles during his spell with the Red Devils.
