Defending Euroleague champions Anadolu Efes started their quest for a third consecutive trophy in fine fashion, beating Serbian side Crvena zvezda 72-59 in their opening match, but they were unable to build on that victory. At the weekend, the Turkish side travelled to Fontvieille to face Monaco with the two sides unable to be separated after four quarters.

Tied at 82-82, the game went into overtime and Monaco eventually took the win 95-92, with seven points in overtime coming from free throws. Anadolu Efes do have positives to take from the game however, with Will Clyburn on fine form hitting 28 points, while Vasilije Micic had eight assists.

Back in the Euroleague after one year out in the EuroCup, Valencia’s return to the top tier of basketball hasn’t gone to plan so far. The Spanish side started the new campaign with a 10-point defeat at home to Baskonia, mostly stemming from poor ends to their half in which they allowed their compatriots to take full control.

But perhaps the more damning and demoralising defeat came in their second week. Once again at home, this time to LDLC ASVEL, Valencia led by 11 points at the end of the first quarter but then fall apart and ending the half four points down (a 15-point swing in the second quarter). It was a gap they were unable to bridge in the second half, losing 77-76 with Jonah Matthews scoring the winner from a free throw with just seconds left.
