Anadolu Efes have been the team to beat in EuroLeague, claiming the last two titles, and will be hoping to become the first to win three in a row since KK Split between 1988 and 1991 (as KK Jugoplastika and then KK POP 84). Last season, Anadolu Efes finished sixth in the regular season table with 16 wins from their 28 games and were pit against Armani Exchange Milan in the playoffs.
The Turkish side needed four games to beat their Italian opponents, winning away in the first match before making their home advantage stick in fixtures three and four. That secured their spot in the Final Four, a semifinal and championship round consisting of just one game each. Both games were close for Anadolu Efes but they first beat Olympiacos 77-74 before taking the championship with a 58-57 victory over Real Madrid, thanks to a second-half comeback and 18-15 final quarter.
Crvena Zvezda, meanwhile, are one of the most successful clubs in Serbian basketball but haven’t translated that success to the EuroLeague in recent years. Last season the Serbian side finished 11th in the regular season with 12 wins from their 28 matches, two victories outside the playoff spots.
This game will be Crvena Zvezda’s second competitive fixture of their season, having opened the Adriatic League with an 87-67 win over North Macedonia’s MZT Skopje Aerodrom in Belgrade. And they may take some confidence from the fact that they did beat Anadolu Efes in the final round of fixtures last season, though the Turkish side will have already had an eye on preparing for the playoffs.
