NFL picks for Week 15: Jacksonville Jaguars, San Francisco 49ers and Green Bay Packers to win

By Nat Coombs

Published: 19:42, 17 December 2021

An intriguing NFL matchup awaits in Jacksonville as the Jaguars begin life after Urban Meyer with the visit of the Houston Texans.

The challenge for stand-in head coach Darrell Bevell will be to deliver more wins from the remaining four games than the two Meyer managed in his 13 fixtures before the axe fell earlier this week.

In his main column this week, our NFL expert Nat Coombs looks at the rookie quarterbacks class of 2021.

Jacksonville Jaguars vs Houston Texans

Turns out I was wrong about Urban Meyer. He wasn’t one and done, he was less than one and done. In what will go down as one of the more cataclysmic appointments in recent NFL history, Meyer leaves behind an altogether under-par roster with distinct pockets of talent, that may flourish quite quickly without his distraction and dysfunction.

Darrell Bevell, an experienced operator, will take over as interim head coach, and this could be good news for James Robinson, the running back who’s been out in the cold under Meyer. Apparently, Urban hired his (now former) offensive co-ordinator for his “ability to adapt to my vision of the offense, which is a little different maybe than he’s done in the past”. So, it could be intriguing to see what Bevell dials up for phenom rookie Trevor Lawrence without the presence of Meyer lurking.

Prediction: Jacksonville Jaguars

San Francisco 49ers vs Atlanta Falcons

The perpetually improbable “the Falcons in the playoff mix” narrative just won’t die. In a condensed NFC playoff race, Atlanta’s win over Carolina last week keeps them in the hunt, but this weekend may just be the final punch that keeps them down on the canvas. It’s credit in particular to a handful of players that they’re even in contention — most notably the extraordinary Cordarrelle Patterson, who has racked up over 1000 yards this season, along with 10 TDs, split almost evenly between rushing and receiving. He’s an ultra-hybrid back who in an alternate universe would be MVP. Vet Matt Ryan has had a solid year with limited support too and deserves a Matthew Stafford-style bounce to a Super Bowl contender for his last hurrah.

His counterpart quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo knows his days in San Fran are numbered, but he’s going down swinging, if not uppercuts or haymakers, then sharp, effective jabs and body blows, with the odd miss. I’m surprised the 49ers don’t pinch hit Trey Lance more – though Kyle Shanahan may be saving up some sorcery for the postseason — and that’s where the emerging San Francisco side is heading, strengthening their chances with a win over the Falcons.

Baltimore Ravens vs Green Bay Packers

Lamar Jackson’s status is unclear, but at the time of writing, the Ravens are leaning towards him starting. We discussed on my podcast this week — The Nat Coombs Show, available on all good podcatchers! — the drop off from starter to back-up, with say Baker Mayfield to Case Keenum at one end, and Aaron Rodgers to Jordan Love at the other. Jackson to Tyler Huntley is closer to the latter than the former, not least because of Lamar’s extraordinary game-changing ability, where, like Rodgers, he can swing the trajectory of a game with a few plays. He’s legitimately dual threat yet his passing game is still wildly underrated by critics.

The Ravens have been in an offensive funk of late (injuries to the line haven’t helped at all) but the suggestion that Lamar is one dimensional persists and underestimates his ability with his arm. Rashod Bateman looks legit, and there’s a sense that another piece or two, and a re-upped line will mean that the Ravens could fly next season. But for now, with a banged up secondary to boot that will have Aaron Rodgers licking his chops, the Packers prove too strong, and Baltimore will most likely be a supporting cast member this season also.
