NFL picks, predictions for Week 13: Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins and LA Rams to win, says Nat Coombs

The New England Patriots look unstoppable after increasing their win streak to six with victory over the Tennessee Titans in NFL Week 12.

Bill Belichick’s team have averaged more than 30 points a game during that run, allowing an average of 11 at the other end, but our NFL expert Nat Coombs is tipping The Buffalo Bills to end their winning run in Week 13.

In his main column this week, Coombs looks at the wide open race for the regular season MVP award.

NFL Week 13 predictions

Buffalo Bills vs New England Patriots

The Belichick vs Brady Super Bowl is well and truly on now, with New England on a tear, rolling from also-rans into the number two spot in the AFC, the form team of the conference. Tampa Bay sit third in the NFC, but are getting back to full strength with the return of Gronk and Scotty Miller to the offense (Antonio Brown sits for a few more weeks but should be good for the playoffs).

The Pats have forged a clear identity that’s been percolating right in front of our eyes and, as all good Belichick teams seem to do, they’re timing their run to perfection, getting stronger as the season progresses whilst other initial trailblazers start to fade. The offense, led by rookie Mac Jones, is getting much of the attention. It’s a smart, organised unit, leveraging a collection of solid, if unremarkable individual players into an increasingly potent crew by virtue of the clarity of Josh McDaniels’ direction and his clever play calling.

Belichick’s impressive defense should cause problems for Josh Allen and Co, especially if they’re successful in their gameplan to contain Allen in the pocket and ask him to beat them without leveraging his dual threat ability. Neutralising the Bills’ leading receiver Stefon Diggs will be JC Jackson’s responsibility, a compelling receiver/corner duel. On the flip side, the Pats will aim to do what the Colts — or specifically Jonathan Taylor — managed against this otherwise impressive Bills defense and run all over them (264 yards), controlling the clock by a significant margin.

Around the NFL’s Gregg Rosenthal dropped by my podcast this week and emphasised how people may be writing off the Bills too quickly, and whilst I’ve been banging the Pats drum before many this season, I think the Bills can take this one, narrowly, in what’s most likely a 1-1 split series, with the return in Foxboro in a few weeks.

Miami Dolphins vs New York Giants

A few short weeks after speculation was mounting over Bryan Flores following the Dolphins’ abject start to the season, Miami could pull off one of the more unlikely runs to a playoff spot in recent memory. With both the defensive troubles and a lack of confidence in sophomore quarterback Tua Tagovailoa now a distant memory, the Dolphins are balling, and with a favourable run-in. Starting with the visit of the directionless Giants before facing a gaggle of contending teams moving in fits and starts, they could just squeak in with a 9-8 record.

Tua’s hit a completion percentage of over 80% in his last two games — Pro Football Network pointing out he’s only the fourth quarterback since 1950 to achieve that — and his connection with Jaylen Waddle, who adds a legitimate number two threat alongside Davante Parker, makes this Miami offense intriguing. The defensive balance that Flores has installed after a frustrating first half of the season underlines his ability, and the unit has talent, particularly in the secondary with the Xavien Howard/Byron Jones tag team.

LA Rams vs Jacksonville Jaguars

If the Dolphins are trending up at the right time, the Rams are their evil twin heading in the wrong direction — an all-star cast built to win it all stuttering at precisely the wrong time. Just as LA were overhyped in the early weeks — their schedule as kind as it gets — so is their demise being overstated, and the perfect landing spot for a team on a three-game tilt is at home to the Jags. Urban Meyer could be one and done, so underwhelming has this Jags side been. Trevor Lawrence is due a few big games in a rookie season, but this won’t be one of them. LA bounce back to winning ways emphatically.
