NFL picks, predictions for Week 12: LA Rams, New England Patriots and Baltimore Ravens to win, says Nat Coombs

The red-hot New England Patriots face the wounded Tennessee Titans in one our selected NFL matchups for Week 12.

The Titans, who were upset by the Texans last week, will look to bounce back in a game which could go a long way to determining the No. 1 seed in the AFC.

In his main column this week, our NFL expert Nat Coombs looks at the under-fire head coaches in the NFL, with Matt Nagy’s firing from the Chicago Bears now considered a case of “not if, but when”.

NFL Week 12 predictions

Green Bay Packers vs LA Rams

Having sprinted out of the traps, the Rams have been clawed back by the chasing pack over the last month. Back-to-back defeats and a bye week out of the spotlight mean their early-season effervescence has been dulled. Closer scrutiny suggests a flattering schedule enhanced our perspective, but there’s no doubt that the loss of Robert Woods has been instrumental in the slowing of the hitherto red-hot offense.

There’s a lot of upsides though, not least the time that Sean McVay will have had to cook up ways of getting Odell Beckham into the mix. Furthermore, Matthew Stafford should realign to the form we saw earlier in the season — he’s a quality quarterback that’s slumped for a few games rather than an average quarterback that’s trending up for a brief time — and that’s the right way round for a Super Bowl-contending team.

The Rams’ landing spot this weekend is easier than it could have been, with the Packers banged up. The offensive line is a weakness that Aaron Donald and Co could really exploit, and the loss of Aaron Jones is yet to be rectified by Matt Lafleur. Jalen Ramsey vs Davante Adams will be compelling viewing — two of the very best in the game pitting their wits against each other.

Prediction: LA Rams

New England Patriots vs Tennessee Titans

We knew the Titans offense would regress following the loss of Derrick Henry, we just didn’t realise it would be quite this bad. Glass-half-full Titans will point to the win-loss column since their superstar went down, and the fact the Titans still occupy the Number One seed in the condensed AFC playoff race.

There’s a valid argument here: Tennessee’s superb defense, much like the Patriots, has been keeping them in games despite an average production offensively. In recent weeks though, New England have been more expansive and ambitious offensively, still leaning on the ground game with an emerging Rhamondre Stevenson improving week-on-week, but benefiting from the increased poise and maturity of fellow rookie Mac Jones.

The Titans are banged up too on this tricky road trip and could miss AJ Brown as well as Julio Jones. Two teams trending in opposite directions at the moment, but both likely playoffs-bound.

Baltimore Ravens vs Cleveland Browns

On my podcast this week — The Nat Coombs Show, available on all good podcatchers — fellow NFL journalist Ben Isaacs and I mused on whether the Browns are credible Super Bowl contenders, and, if not, what is the point of playing Baker Mayfield anymore this season? He’s clearly playing hurt, and would benefit from an operation and long recuperation before going again next season. Case Keenum is an able back-up and could preside over a solid shot at the playoffs, particularly if the ground game drives them as it typically does with Nick Chubb back in the line-up.

The Ravens won ugly when Lamar Jackson went down with Covid last week — back up Tyler Huntley doing just enough — and it’s wins like that that could prove crucial in a tight battle for both the division and playoff seeding. The Ravens may just be the best team in the AFC right now — an improving defense and an offense stronger year-on-year, with rookie Rashod Bateman providing a viable third top-tier threat to complement Hollywood Brown and Mark Andrews. Baltimore lay down a big performance here to create separation in the division. Cleveland will live to fight another day but this most likely isn’t their year.
