French goalkeeper Alphonse Areola may have played his final game for Paris Saint-Germain, according to boss Thomas Tuchel.

The 26-year-old has been linked with a move to Real Madrid over the summer, with Los Blancos looking to provide strong competition for their no.1 shirt after an unconvincing season from Thibaut Courtois.

Will Areola leave Real Madrid? Five things to know…

  • Alphonse Areola joined PSG in 2006 as a 13-year-old.
  • Last season he was rotated in goal for PSG with veteran Gianluigi Buffon.
  • He has been linked with a move to Real Madrid during the summer.
  • Areola was benched for PSG’s win over Metz on Friday with Marcin Bulka starting.
  • And PSG boss Thomas Tuchel admits Areola could have played his final PSG game.

Areola started in PSG’s first four games of the season, keeping two clean sheets, but was on the bench on Friday night for the French champions’ Ligue 1 match against FC Metz.

Starting in his place was 19-year-old Marcin Bulka who was making his debut after signing from Chelsea in the summer.

This led to further speculation over Areola’s future, and speaking after the game, PSG boss Tuchel revealed a departure is possible.

He told reporters:”(That’s) possible, yes. There are negotiations between clubs and Alphonse. That’s why he decided to not play.”

PSG have already seen one senior goalkeeper leave during the summer window, with Gianluigi Buffon returning to Juventus – a move which was believed to confirm Areola’s space as Tuchel’s no.1.

According to reports, however, Real Madrid’s deal for Areola would see Costa Rican goalkeeper Keylor Navas move in the opposite direction to compete with Bulka at PSG.

Should Areola’s move to Real Madrid go through before Monday’s transfer deadline, it would not be too long before the goalkeeper is reunited with PSG, with the two sides drawn together in the Champions League group stage.

Madrid will travel to PSG for Group A’s opening game on September 18, while the return match at the Santiago Bernabeu is scheduled for November 26.

PSG’s summer exodus

If Areola’s move to Real Madrid is confirmed, the French goalkeeper would become the 13th permanent departure from Paris this summer.

The French champions have already lost the likes of Dani Alves, Adrien Rabiot and Buffon among other more fringe stars.

But Areola may not be the last, with PSG sporting director Leonardo admitted there have been talks with Barcelona over the potential sale of Neymar.
