Ekaterina Alexandrova moved into this round via retirement. She was leading her Canadian opponent Bianca Andreescu by 7-6, 0-2 before an unfortunate incident ended the contest. This will be Alexandrova’s first quarter-final appearance on US soil. Alexandrova came into this latest Miami Open having never won back-to-back matches here; the Russian survived close battles against Taylor Townsend in three sets and world number nine Belinda Bencic, 7-6, 6-3. Alexandrova has been to no fewer than 14 semifinals in her career and since mid-2021 she boasts a perfect 6-0 record in quarterfinals. Alexandrova is about to play her second-ever WTA 1000 quarter-final after the one in Madrid last year when she appeared as a qualifier and went on to make the semifinals.
As for Petra Kvitova, she brushed off five breakpoints in the first set of her fourth-round meeting with Austin runner-up Varvara Gracheva, before claiming a 7-5, 7-6 success. Kvitova has won all three rounds in straight sets but faced a tiebreak in the last two. It has led to her third quarter-final of the season and she will now seek her first semi-final, having lost to Daria Kasatkina in Adelaide and Maria Sakkari in Indian Wells. She is 0-3 in Miami quarter-finals, most recently losing to Iga Swiatek a year ago. This is one of the three WTA 1000 events in this calendar in which she is yet to reach the last four (also Indian Wells, Rome). Kvitova has been to just two semi-finals in the last 15 months, leading to a title in Eastbourne and a runner-up finish in Cincinnati.
