Alexander Zverev will be aiming to reach the semi-finals of the French Open for the third consecutive year on Wednesday, putting his poor showing at the Australian Open firmly behind him. After reaching two semi-finals at Grand Slams last year, Zverev was beaten in the second round of the Australian Open losing to Lucky Loser Michael Mmoh in four sets.

The German was the 12th seed for the Australian Open but a tough 2023 has seen him drop to 22nd seed for Roland Garros, with underwhelming runs across the tour. However, Zverev is enjoying himself at the French Open so far, dropping just one set en route to the quarter-finals with wins over Lloyd Harris, Alex Molcan, Frances Tiafoe and Grigor Dimitrov.

On the other side of this match, Tomas Martin Etcheverry is enjoying his best ever run at a Grand Slam, beating his previous best of the second round at the Australian Open by some distance. A relative newbie to the Grand Slam circuit, Etcheverry only made his debut at last year’s Australian Open, but bowed out at the first round in all four.

As mentioned, there was a trip to the second round of the Australian Open in 2023 and he carried that on at the Miami Open, Madrid Open and Italian Open. But onto new frontiers at the French Open, Etcheverry has beaten Jack Draper, Alex de Minaur, Borna Coric and Yoshihito Nishioka to reach the quarter-finals, all without dropping a set — though the win over Draper came via retirement in the second set with Etcheverry 1-0 up.

Prediction: Alexander Zverev in four sets
