Though he is yet to win a Grand Slam title, Zverev has been making a habit of going far in tournaments, most recently reaching the semi-finals of the Italian Open, where he lost 2-1 to Stefanos Tsitsipas. The German also made the semi-finals of the French Open last year, dropping just two sets in five matches before once again losing to Tsitsipas 3-2. With Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal around — the latter carrying a foot injury but formidable in this competition over the years — it’s hard to imagine a new name going on the Musketeers’ Cup, but Zverev is among the favourites to break the cycle.
As for Ofner, this is just his second appearance at a Grand Slam and his first since Wimbledon in 2017. That said, he’s a regular on the ATP Challenge Tour and often performs well, particularly on clay. The Austrian also dropped just one set in qualifying for this competition, so Zverev will have to show the utmost respect to ensure this doesn’t become more challenging than it needs to be.
