Semi-finalist at the French Open for the third year running, Alexander Zverev’s attention now turns to the grass season and a quest to beat his previous best of a run to the fourth round at Wimbledon. This time around at the French Open, Zverev was beaten in straight sets by Casper Ruud, but there is no time for the 26-year-old to wallow in self pity with Wimbledon just two weeks away.
Zverev missed the Halle Open last year but entered the 2023 edition as the ninth seed, eventually becoming the eighth-highest ranked player as Felix Auger-Aliassime withdrew. The German was given a potentially tricky tie in the first round but wildcard Dominic Thiem was beaten in straight sets, as was Denis Shapovalov in the second round, a 6-2, 6-4 victory.
Nicolas Jarry, meanwhile, will be hoping for another big scalp at the Halle Open as he continues his climb up the rankings. The Chilean is currently 28th in the ATP world rankings, his highest-ever standing in tennis, helped by a run to the fourth round of the French Open — also knocked out by Ruud.
Still unseeded at the Halle Open, though just a few rankings below Zverev, Jarry beat Corentin Moutet in the first round but the big result came in his last match. In the second round, Jarry was pit against second seed Stefanos Tsitsipas but beat the Greek in straight sets, winning 7-6 (6), 7-5 to reach yet another quarter-final.
