Zverev is quickly becoming an expert in this tournament, reaching the semi-finals in each of his last two attempts, so the German will be a formidable opponent.
In the other corner, Tiafoe has had a similarly simple path through the first two rounds, beating Filip Krajinovic in straight sets before seeing off Aslan Karatsev 3-1 last time out. The American is actually ranked higher than Zverev, currently running in as the 12th seed, despite only going beyond the fourth round of a Grand Slam on two occasions; reaching the quarter-finals of the Australian Open in 2019 and the US Open semi-finals last year. Tiafoe’s high ranking is largely down to his excellent 2023 form, winning 23 of his 31 matches overall, including eight of 11 on clay.
This is the eighth meeting between these two players to date, with Zverev holding an overwhelming 6-1 advantage. This is, however, their first clash on clay.
