Alexander Zverev will make his bow at the 2023 BMW Open on Wednesday, hoping for a good run in the tournament as the clay court season continues. Although this is only an ATP 250 tournament, it’s good practice for the French Open which is just over a month away. Zverev has previous success at the BMW Open, winning back-to-back tournaments in 2017 and 2018 when it was held a little later in the year in May, but he hasn’t reached a final since.
Last year, Zverev was the top seed for the BMW Open but bowed out at this stage, beaten by eventual champion and wildcard entry Holger Rune. This is actually the first year since 2017 that Zverev isn’t the top seed for the BMW Open, though he did still receive a bye to the second round as third seed.
Christopher O’Connell isn’t really a name that pops up in the latter stages of the big tournaments, ranked 82nd in the world, but he can be a handful on his day. The Australian has already faced Zverev this year, meeting in the second round of the Dubai Tennis Championships, but it was a straight-set victory for the German.
That is often the story for O’Connell, who also lost in the quarter-finals of the Qatar Open to Daniil Medvedev, though he did beat Roberto Bautista Agut to reach that stage. O’Connell entered the 2023 BMW Open in the first round and has already beaten Frenchman Ugo Humbert 6-4, 6-4, to set up Wednesday’s clash.
