Liverpool legend John Aldridge has urged the Reds to sign Tottenham Hotspur forward Lucas Moura rather than trying to secure Antoine Griezmann.

Liverpool won the 2018/19 Champions League but have been advised to target established Premier League stars this summer rather than bring in Atletico Madrid’s prized asset.

Should Liverpool choose Moura or Griezmann? Five things to know…

  1. Jurgen Klopp will be keen to bolster his attack this summer with Daniel Sturridge set to depart upon the expiration of his contract.
  2. Antoine Griezmann has already announced his decision to leave Atletico Madrid this summer.
  3. Barcelona are reportedly leading the race to sign the Frenchman.
  4. Meanwhile, Lucas Moura played a key role in Spurs’ run to the Champions League final.
  5. As such, Aldridge believes Liverpool should target the Brazilian forward.

Atleti’s star striker has been the subject of much speculation already this summer and is widely expected to sign for Spanish giants Barcelona.

The Frenchman would likely cost a figure close to £100m, with both Liverpool and Manchester United reportedly interested in the striker’s services.

Despite Griezmann having an excellent record in 2018/19, scoring 15 La Liga goals, Aldridge has suggested his former club should look closer to home to improve their frontline.

In his column for the Irish Independent, Aldridge wrote: “With [Daniel] Sturridge leaving the club and his huge wages coming off the weekly bill, it opens up the opportunity for Klopp to sign an out-and-out goalscorer who could offer something different if one of the front three is injured or out of form.

“Antoine Griezmann has been mentioned as a possible target, but he would be a very expensive option as his transfer fee and wages would be extravagant for a player who would expect to start every week.

“So I wonder whether Lucas Moura could be prised away from Tottenham, as he had to be a little bemused to be left out of their Champions League final starting line-up after he scored a fantastic hat-trick in the semi-final against Ajax.”

Aldridge believes the versatility of Moura would also benefit the Reds hugely should any of their established forwards get injured.

He  continued: “Moura is a tricky forward who could slot into the team if any of the front three were out.”

Aldridge backs Zaha transfer

Sticking with the theme of securing domestic signatures, Aldridge also urged Klopp to look at Crystal Palaces’ stand out star, Wilfred Zaha, who announced earlier in the season his desire to play Champions League football next term.

Aldridge added: “Maybe they should look into the possibility of recruiting Wilfried Zaha from Crystal Palace, who is rumoured to have made it clear he wants to move on to play Champions League football.

“Zaha has given Liverpool some real problems in the last couple of years and Klopp’s ability to turn talents of his type into consistent performers has to make him the kind of player who could thrive at Anfield.

“Transfer fees and wages will be an issue for Liverpool. They won’t pay the kind of crazy money on offer at clubs being fuelled by owners using up spare change from their country’s oil business to play fantasy football.”
