Alaves vs Atletico Madrid build-up, previous line-ups & team news:
Heading into the seventh La Liga matchday there are three clubs yet to register a win this season. Of that aforementioned trio — which includes Granada — two (Getafe and Alaves) remain pointless. Propping up the young championship table (due to a -10 goal difference) is Javier Calleja’s men who are on a five-game winless streak meaning they have a game in hand. El Glorioso began with a humbling 1-4 home loss against Real Madrid before suffering four consecutive defeats on the bounce which saw them register no goals and concede seven times. In eleven previous La Liga home meetings with Atléti they’ve won four times with the most recent coming in December 2002 when they ran out 2-0 winners.
For a third time across their previous four La Liga outings Atletico Madrid netted a goal in the final minute subsequently earning them a combined five points. Diego Simeone’s men rescued a point against Villarreal in sensational circumstances before taking all the spoils at Espanyol and Getafe’s expense. No team in Spain’s top division this season has gained more points (7) from losing positions than Los Rojiblancos who are the league’s defending champions. Going into this weekend’s fixture they find themselves unbeaten after six matches played and two points behind early leaders — and city rivals — Real Madrid.
- Alaves (vs Espanyol): Pacheco; Aguirregabiria, Tachi, Laguardia, Duarte; Rioja, Loum, Pina, García; Guidetti, Joselu.
- Atletico Madrid (vs Getafe): Oblak; Trippier, Savic, Giménez, Lodi; Correa, Herrera, Llorente, Carrasco; Griezmann, Suárez.
Alaves are without Edgar Mendez with a knee injury, while Javier Lopez remains sidelined. Pere Pons and Florian Lejeune are both doubts. Joao Felix is suspended for the visitors who are missing Thomas Lemar and Koke through injury.

Player to watch: Luis Suárez (Atletico Madrid)
Many eyebrows were raised when Barcelona and Luis Suárez parted ways last summer. His subsequent move to Atlético Madrid proved to be the ultimate difference as Diego Simeone’s men ended a seven-year championship wait. Suárez himself ended the 2020/21 season with 21 goals — trailing only Gerard Moreno (23), Karim Benzema (23) and former Barça teammate Lionel Messi (30) — in the Pichichi Trophy standing. So far this season he’s on three strikes, which leaves him some way behind early pacesetter Benzema (8), but two of those strikes came in their recent comeback win over Getafe. The 34-year-old Uruguayan marksman netted in the 78th and 90+ minutes. It lead to Marca proclaiming “The gunman is back,” Atleti fans will be hoping this will be the start of him going on a run akin to last season.
