Ajax vs Cambuur build-up & previous line-ups:
The mood in Ajax’s camp is certainly high following their emphatic Champions League opening round win at Sporting, what should have been a testing occasion turned into one of the club’s most successful away trips in tournament history, Erik ten Hag’s men swept their Portuguese counterparts by registering a 1-5 success with centre-forward Sébastien Haller becoming only the second Ajax man — after legendary playmaker Jari Litmanen – to bag a hat-trick since the competition’s inception. Attention now focuses on their Eredivisie campaign; heading into this latest round of fixtures they’re unbeaten after winning three of four matches played. The only blip was a 1-1 draw at Twente on matchday two. At home De Godenzonen are on a five-game winning streak – during this run the Amsterdammers have scored 19 goals and conceded just the once.
Once securing their return to Dutch top-flight football the aim for Cambuur this season is survival. Before this season, and since 2000, the club from Leeuwarden have taken part in three previous Eredivisie campaigns, with their average position being 14th. Not much has been expected of Henk de Jong’s team and those feelings were heightened following back-to-back defeats against Groningen and PSV however just before heading into the recent international break The Yellow-Blues picked up a morale-boosting 2-0 success over Twente and that galvanised them as last time out they ran out 5-2 winners against fellow new boys Go Ahead Eagles but their record in Amsterdam is not the prettiest. On their previous seven visits to Ajax they’ve returned home with six defeats; the sole exception was a 1-1 draw in Match 2014.
- Ajax (vs Sporting): Pasveer; Mazraoui, Timber, Martínez, Blind; Álvarez, Berghuis, Gravenberch; Antony, Haller, Tadic.
- Cambuur (vs Go Ahead Eagles): Stevens; Schmidt, Tol, Mac-Intosch, Bangura; Hoedemakers, Jacobs, Maulun; Breij, Boere, Kallon.

Player to watch: Sébastien Haller (Ajax)
As far as Champions League debuts go, Sébastien Haller’s is right up there. After the club’s administrators mistakenly left him off their Europa League squad list at the backend of last season, the Ivorian marksman has certainly made up for lost time. Haller became the second player after Marco van Basten to net four goals in his first competition appearance as Ajax ran out 1-5 winners at the home of Portugal champions Sporting who prior to Wednesday evening had gone 22 consecutive matches at Estadio Jose Alvalade without tasting defeat.
Back to domestic matters, the former West Ham man has started his Eredivisie campaign on a strong note, the 27-year-old marksman heads into this weekend having netted four goals across the Amsterdammers opening four league games. His opposite number Tom Boere of newly-promoted Cambuur has netted half of those efforts but possesses a strong conversation rate and shot accuracy. Both men, expected to lead their respective forward lines, have created one goal apiece. Haller has been involved in a goal in each of Ajax’s previous four Eredivisie fixtures and will fancy his chances of stretching that streak at the Johan Cruyff Arena on Sunday.
