This is the 25th edition with PSV winning 11 previous finals to Ajax’s six. In nine previous meetings PSV have won on four occasions including last year’s game which saw them run out 4-0 winners. Ajax’s most recent success against their rivals came in 2019 when they claimed a 2-0 victory.
Ajax will truly start life without Erik ten Hag on home soil in what is Dutch football’s curtain-raiser. De Godenzonen have won the last three completed Eredivisie seasons and pressure is on Alfred Schreuder to maintain that level of success. Winning here alleviates some of that pressure especially as Ten Hag wasn’t the only individual to leave Amsterdam this summer. Lisandro Martinez has followed him to Manchester United while Ryan Gravenberch and Noussair Mazraoui have reunited with former Ajax captain Matthijs de Ligt at Bayern Munich. Uncharacteristically, Ajax have spent big this summer with recruits left-back Owen Wijndal and forward Steven Bergwijn expected to start. Their fellow new arrivals Francisco Conceição and Calvin Bassey are hoping to feature in some capacity.
It’s all changed at PSV too. Club great Ruud van Nistelrooy has replaced Roger Schmidt as head coach with this appointment being the former Man Utd marksman first senior managerial job. So far De Boeren have kept hold of their big guns with only Bundesliga bound Mario Götze and Ritsu Doan leaving the club. Elsewhere last season’s KNVB Beker winners have strengthened with Walter Benítez and Xavi Simons coming over from Ligue 1 while Guus Til opted to stay in the Netherlands but not with Feyenoord whom he represented only a few months ago. Luuk de Jong is back after spending time in Spain with Sevilla and then Barcelona on loan. Given the close proximity of this game and PSV’s clash with Monaco in the Champions League third qualifying round Van Nistelrooy could be tempted to name a weaker side.
Scoreline prediction: Ajax 2-1 PSV
