AC Milan vs Venezia build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:

Prior to the weekend, AC Milan were perfect in Serie A having won all of their opening three matches. The Rossoneri started the campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Sampdoria but entered the international break off the back of a 4-1 thrashing over Cagliari. The past two games have been real tests for Milan, but they have come through on top. First, Milan beat Lazio 2-0 at home to end their unbeaten start in Serie A before coming from behind to pile the misery on Juventus, in a 1-1 draw. There has been a blip in the Champions League, as Milan lost 3-2 to Liverpool, but Pioli will be pleased with his side’s start and the fact they could draw level with Inter with a win.

Venezia, meanwhile, are languishing near the bottom of the table after four games, having managed just one win so far. The Venetian side, who were promoted from Serie B last season, were given a tough first game of the campaign and were beaten 2-0 by Napoli, before losing 3-0 to Udinese – both coming away from home. After the international break, Venezia did get their first win of the campaign, beating Empoli 2-1 but they slumped to yet another defeat at the weekend, with Mehdi Bourabia scoring an injury-time winner in a 2-1 win for Spezia. As a result, Venezia are 17th, just one point above the relegation zone (and Juventus).

  • AC Milan (vs Juventus): Maignan; Tomori, Kjaer*, Romagnoli, Hernandez; Tonali, Kessie; Saelemaekers, Diaz, Leao; Rebic.
  • Venezia (vs their previous opponents): Maenpaa; Mazzocchi, Caldara, Ceccaroni, Molinaro; Busio, Vacca, Crnigoj; Okereke, Henry, Johnsen.

AC Milan remain without a host of players including strikers Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Olivier Giroud, while Simon Kjaer suffered an injury in the draw with Juventus and will also miss out. Venezia, meanwhile, are without Luca Lezzerini, Luca Fiordilino and Lauri Ala-Myllymaeki.

Milan “probably the best team in Serie A right now”

AC Milan showed some of their mettle in coming from behind against Juventus at the weekend, a game they may have lost last season – having fallen away dramatically following a good start to the campaign.

The Rossoneri had been hit with injury problems including losing both of their main strikers Ibrahimovic and Giroud, as well as right-back Davide Calabria, having to play Fikayo Tomori in his place. Things looked even worse as Milan went a goal down within five minutes as Alvaro Morata opened the scoring, but Ante Rebic headed home from a corner with 15 minutes to go to secure the point.

As a result, Milan’s unbeaten start continues and although Napoli have been perfect in their opening four games, Venezia manager Paolo Zanetti believes the Rossoneri might be the best team in Serie A right now.

“Milan are probably the best team in Serie A right now, as they have width, depth, play between the lines and have every strength required, as well as a very clear identity,” he said.

“We must think too about how to cause problems for them, because if we just focus on being defensive tomorrow, then we’ve already lost.

“We don’t intend to sit there as spectators for 90 minutes, so with all due humility and respect, we must try to make life difficult for Milan, otherwise it’ll be 90 minutes of agony.”

A win over Venezia on Wednesday would see Milan mimic their start to last season in earning 13 points from their opening five Serie A matches. Last season that unbeaten start would stretch all the way into January, when a 3-1 defeat to Juventus sent Milan into a spiral that of four defeats in eight games that would ultimately cost them the title.
