AC Milan vs Sassuolo build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:

AC Milan’s start to the 2021/22 Serie A campaign has been excellent, but Stefano Pioli’s men may be feeling slightly low going into this weekend’s fixture. Having won 10 of their opening 11 Serie A matches, drawing the other, AC Milan have now dropped points in each of their last two league games. The first was a 1-1 draw with Inter Milan and then last weekend they tasted defeat in the league for the first time, losing 4-3 to Fiorentina. Fortunately for AC Milan they remain level on points with Napoli who also drew one and lost one of their past two games, and they bounced back by beating Atletico Madrid in midweek. But they’ll want to get back to winning ways in the league.

There’s a good chance that will happen too as Sassuolo are also on a poor run, but have not had a Champions League match to help them turn things around. The visitors are currently down in 13th, sitting equidistant between the European spots and relegation zone, but go into this game without a win in their past three matches. Two of those games ended in defeat as Sassuolo lost to Empoli and Udinese prior to the November international break, though they did manage to get a point last weekend against relegation-fighting Cagliari.

  • AC Milan (vs Atletico Madrid): Tatarusanu; Kalulu, Kjaer, Romagnoli, Hernandez; Tonali, Kessie; Saelemaekers, Diaz, Krunic; Giroud.
  • Sassuolo (vs Cagliari): Consigli; Toljan, Ayhan, Ferrari, Rogerio; Traore, Lopez, Frattesi*; Berardi, Scamacca, Raspadori.

Olivier Giroud picked up an injury in the win over Atletico Madrid and joins the likes of Ante Rebic, Mike Maignan, Davide Calabria and Samu Castillejo on the sidelines. Sassuolo, meanwhile, are without Pedro Obiang through injury with Davide Frattesi suspended.

Player to watch: Zlatan Ibrahimovic (AC Milan)

For some clubs, losing an experienced striker to injury would cause problems for the season, but fortunately for AC Milan they have an even more experienced man to replace Giroud.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who turned 40 last month, has had to deal with injury problems of his own this season but has returned at the right time – and in the right form. The Swede has scored four goals in his past six Serie A matches including a brace against Fiorentina last weekend.

Although the brace couldn’t prevent AC Milan from losing against Fiorentina, it did move Ibrahimovic closer to joining an exclusive club. The 40-year-old is now just two goals away from becoming the third player to score 300 goals in Europe’s top five leagues in the 2000s. Unsurprisingly, the only two players to achieve that feat so far are Cristiano Ronaldo (480) and Lionel Messi (475).

Ibrahimovic is also just one goal away from equalling Silvio Piola for the most goals in Serie A history after turning 38 years old, currently on 30 goals since his 38th birthday.
