AC Milan vs Inter Milan build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:

A surprise 2-0 loss at Spezia last time out saw AC Milan surrender their position atop of the Serie A championship. It was only Milan’s third defeat of the season but worryingly those setbacks have all come in their last seven matches. At one point it seemed they were heading towards a first Scudetto since 2011 but this recent form means the Rossoneri now have a fight on their hands. Two of the aforementioned losses came at home against fellow top-six rivals Juventus (1-3) and Atalanta (0-3). Those aside, Milan’s record at the San Siro has been above par as they’ve registered six wins from 11 played, and when last they faced Inter at their shared ground it was Stefano Pioli’s men that came out on top.

Back in October, a Zlatan Ibrahimovic brace (against his former side) ultimately settled the score. Inter were going through a slump at the time as that defeat was part of a five-game spell that yielded just one victory (0-2 at Genoa). Conte, who seemed destined to leave his managerial position last summer, subsequently turned it around by going on an eight-match winning run. And most recently a 3-1 win over Lazio saw them restore a one-point lead atop the table.

So form-wise, revenge is in the air. Inter’s last four outings as the away team has seen them claim only one victory (0-2 at Fiorentina) but they’ll be fancying their chances of inflicting further misery on their neighbours this weekend.

Previous XIs:

  • AC Milan (vs Red Star): Donnarumma; Kalulu, Tomori, Romagnoli, Hernández; Bennacer, Meïté; Castillejo, Krunic, Rebic; Mandzukic.
  • Inter Milan (vs Lazio): Handanovic; Skriniar, Bastoni, De Vrij; Hakimi, Barella, Eriksen, Brozovic, Perisic; Lukaku, Martínez.

Ismaël Bennacer and Brahim Díaz, who are both recovering from respective hamstring injuries, remain sidelined for Milan this weekend. Arturo Vidal, meanwhile, is Inter’s only major absentee.

Milan v Inter players to watch:

‘Cometh the hour, cometh the man’ is what Milan supporters are hoping to see when Zlatan Ibrahimovic expectedly takes his place in Milan’s starting lineup after being an unused substitute in their Europa League draw at Serbian giants Red Star earlier in the week. Ibrahimovic has been nothing short of incredible this season; the 39-year-old Swedish marksman has netted 14 goals across 12 league outings coming into this game, which is one particular fixture in which he’s thrived since moving to Italy more than a decade ago. To date, the enigmatic centre-forward has bagged ten Milan derby goals, with all but two of those coming in a red-and-black jersey.

The most recent meeting between Milan’s biggest clubs took place in the Coppa, which saw former Manchester United teammates Ibrahimovic and Romelu Lukaku involved in a heated confrontation. Inter eventually ran out 2-1 winners with the Belgian striker drawing the game level after Ibra had put the Rossoneri in front. It was yet another Derby della Madonnina game that saw Lukaku finding the net. He goes into Sunday’s game on the cusp of making history. Not since Romeo Benetti (1972-1973), then representing AC Milan, has a player scored in four consecutive Milan derbies in Serie A.

Another interesting, and less hostile, subplot is the presence of two of Europe’s most exciting full-backs, both of whom used to play for Real Madrid.

Hakimi v Hernandez stats comparison

Madrid sold Achraf Hakimi to Inter last summer for around £40 million, despite having witnessed him score double figures in the Bundesliga on loan with Borussia Dortmund across one campaign.

Inter have got what they paid for so far. Hakimi has six goals and four assists in 22 league appearances so far this season from the right wing-back position. Combined, that is the joint-most direct goal contributions in Serie A across all players categorised as ‘defenders’ by Opta.

Milan left-back Theo Hernandez, sold by Madrid one year previous for £20m, acknowledged the parallel between he and Hakimi in a recent interview with DAZN.

“Both Achraf and I played little in Madrid and the best thing for us was to leave, because if you are there and you don’t play you are not happy and you don’t have the opportunities you wanted,” said Hernandez, who has four goals and as many assists in Serie A this season.

“We did the best we could and now we are here in Milan.

“Achraf is an incredible player, he has a lot of talent, speed, quality, we more or less resemble each other. I know him personally and we have spent a lot of time together, he is a good guy and a great friend. What will I say to him in the derby? I will say nothing, on the field we are enemies, but outside of it we are good friends.”
