AC Milan vs Juventus build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:
After a relative wobble (two draws in a row) AC Milan have put their title charge back on track with three consecutive wins against Sassuolo, Lazio and, most recently, Benevento. Despite juggling various injury concerns, Pioli’s side have managed to remain unbeaten, helping them keep rivals Inter at bay.
Ten points and four places back on the current leaders are Juventus, who although losing just once, have managed just seven Serie A wins so far this season. That said, the defending champions have played one game less than Milan and managed to recover from their damaging 3-0 defeat to Fiorentina before Christmas with a 4-1 thrashing of Udinese over the weekend.
- AC Milan (vs Benevento): Donnarumma; Calabria, Kjaer, Romagnoli, Dalot; Tonali*, Kessie; Diaz, Calhanoglu, Rebic; Leao.
- Juventus (vs Udinese): Szczesny; Danilo, Bonucci, De Ligt, Sandro; Chiesa, McKennie, Bentancur, Ramsey; Dybala, Ronaldo.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Matteo Gabbia, Alexis Saelemaekers, and Ismael Bennacer are all injured, while Pioli’s squad is further stretched by the suspension of Sandro Tonali, who was sent off during the win over Benevento.
Pirlo will take a fully fit squad to Milan for this vital Serie A title clash.
Players to watch:
AC Milan: Key to Milan’s swift return to form has been the recent output of Portuguese forward, Rafael Leao. Though often inconsistent in the 18-yard box, the 21-year-old has managed to score twice across Milan’s last three victories, opening the scoring against Sassuolo before finishing the job with his side’s second against Benevento recently. This has extended Leao’s record to four goals and three assists in just 767 minutes in Serie A this season and, with Ibrahimovic out for the foreseeable future, his continued form will play a huge part in sustaining Milan’s title charge.
Juventus: It might seem like a cliche, but you really can’t look any further than Cristiano Ronaldo when plotting Juve’s route to victory against Milan. Even at 35, the Portugal international is hitting the net at an alarming rate, scoring 14 times in 11 Serie A outings alone this season, at least 10 more than any other player in Pirlo’s squad. Even taking away his penalty and set-piece goals, Ronaldo has scored nine times from open play, with his next-closest teammate, Alvaro Morata, only managing four strikes. Ronaldo has six career goals to his name against Milan, including one in their last Serie A meeting and another in the first leg of last season’s Coppa Italia semi-final. A man for the big occasion, you can be sure of Ronaldo bringing his A-game east to Milan.
