AC Milan vs Salernitana build-up:

AC Milan put their Serie A losing streak behind them in midweek with a comfortable 3-0 win over Genoa, which has them right on the coattails of Napoli. Prior to the victory against Genoa, Milan had gone three league matches without a win, drawing with Inter Milan before losing to Fiorentina and Sassuolo (their first two league defeats of the season).

That run had seen Milan drop to three points below Napoli and only one clear of third-placed Inter, but they can now put the pressure on the teams around them as the first to play this weekend.

Milan will also have one eye on the Champions League in midweek, where they face Liverpool needing a win and other results to go their way to secure their spot in the last-16.

They may be positive about their opposition this weekend, however, with Salernitana in terrible form at the bottom of the table. It hasn’t been a good return to Serie A for Salernitana with just two wins and 11 defeats from their opening 15 matches.

Since beating Venezia 2-1 near the end of October, Salernitana have lost four of their next five matches, only splitting the defeats with a draw against 19th-placed Cagliari. But any hopes of building on that draw last weekend were extinguished by Juventus in midweek, a 2-0 defeat that kicks off a tough period for Salernitana where they will face Milan, Fiorentina and Inter in the space of two weeks.

AC Milan vs Salernitana previous line-ups & injury news

  • AC Milan (vs Genoa): Maignan; Kalulu, Kjaer, Tomori, Hernandez; Tonali, Kessie; Messias, Diaz, Krunic; Ibrahimovic.
  • Salernitana (vs Juventus): Belec; Veseli, Gyomber, Gagliolo, Ranieri; Kechrida, Capezzi, Coulibaly, Zortea; Bonazzoli, Simy.

Alessio Romagnoli is available for AC Milan after suspension, but Olivier Giroud, Ante Rebic and Davide Calabria are all still out. Salernitana remain without a host of players including Franck Ribery.

Player to watch: Junior Messias (AC Milan)

In the midweek win over Genoa, Junior Messias was the hero for AC Milan, scoring once in either half after Zlatan Ibrahimovic had given the Rossoneri the lead. Although Ibrahimovic will get the plaudits for his free-kick, and the fact he is Milan’s top scorer in Serie A with six goals, Messias has hit form at the right time.

Joining on loan from Crotone in the summer, Messias had a slow start to life in Milan, suffering with an injury issue that saw him play just one game prior to the November international break. But since club football returned, Messias has made his way into the Milan team and the win over Genoa was his first start.

Prior to that Messias had made four substitute appearances, scoring the only goal in a 1-0 win over Atletico Madrid in the Champions League to keep their European hopes alive. After two goals in his first start for the club, Messias will be looking for another positive performance at the weekend whether he is partially rested with Liverpool in mind or given a full run at strugglers Salernitana.
