AC Milan must likely win all their remaining league to hold off second-placed Inter and win the league title. Their date with relegation-battlers Genoa on Friday night (8:00pm UK) at San Siro offers a great opportunity to keep the heat on their crosstown rivals.

AC Milan team news

Despite drawing consecutive league games for the first time since 2018 (interestingly, also against Bologna and Torino), AC Milan still sit atop the Serie A table. However, those recent missteps have taken the Rossoneri’s destiny out of their own hands.

With six games remaining in the Serie campaign, Milan sit on 68 points, two up on both second-placed Inter (who face Spezia, also on Friday night, just before this contest) and third-placed Napoli. However, their intracity rivals boast not only a more potent attack and a stingier defence than Milan (as, incidentally do Napoli), but also have a game in hand. Milan’s early-March defeat of Napoli now looms massive (as does Napoli’s loss in their most recent league outing, against Fiorentina), as any other result would have the Rossoneri looking up at the top of the table.

Milan’s own missteps over the past two weeks have put them behind the eight ball. Nonetheless, they remain in first place for now and can only do their best to cash in on their remaining fixtures results and hope that Inter (against whom Milan square off four days after this match in the second leg of a Coppa Italia semifinal) drop points.

This Friday, Milan welcome to San Siro a team with its own sense of urgency, albeit one fueled by the need for survival and not triumph. As motivated as their opponents will be, this is an excellent opportunity for Milan to return to winning ways.

AC Milan predicted XI: Maignan; Calabria, Tomori, Hernández, Kalulu; Kessié, Tonali; Saelemaekers, Díaz, Leão; Giroud

Genoa team news

Genoa currently sit 19th in Serie A, level on points with 18th-placed Venezia (who’ve got a game in hand), three points adrift of Cagliari in the last survival spot. Relatively speaking, Genoa are the most in-form side at the foot of the Serie A table, having taken five points in their last five games while Cagliari and Venezia have lost, respectively, each of their last five and six league outings.

Where Milan are missing a couple of key pieces – namely Zlatan Ibrahimovic in attack, Alessandro Florenzi and Simon Kjaer in midfield – Genoa come into this game with a fairly clean bill of health. However, even at full strength, this Genoa side doesn’t pose much of a threat. Their attack, which has yielded just 24 goals in 32 games, is the most anaemic in the league (last-placed Salernitana have scored just 23, but have two games in hand). Compounding matters is the fact that Milan have conceded just once in their last five home league games.

On the bright side, Genoa are the best defensive outfit in Serie A’s bottom seven (admittedly a low bar, but something nonetheless), and Milan, in those previous five home games, have scored just three times themselves.

Genoa predicted XI: Sirigu; Maksimović, Hefti, Østigård, Vásquez; Badelj, Galdames; Amiri, Melegoni, Portanova; Piccoli

Scoreline prediction: AC Milan 2-0 Genoa

Both sides are going to be highly motivated Friday night at San Siro. Genoa can see safety on the horizon, with just three points and two utterly defeated opponents in their way. At the same time, it’s tough to see a positive result against a top-of-the-table side that’s still got everything to play for. Look for Genoa to turn this into an ugly, plodding affair that’s more work than Milan would like… but for the hosts to ultimately escape with a victory.
