The final weekend of the 2019/20 Serie A season has AC Milan looking to end on a high against Cagliari on Saturday at 7:45pm.

Milan can rest easy going into the final game. Sixth place was secured in midweek, meaning the Rossoneri will be in next season’s Europa League, albeit starting from the second qualifying round.

The sixth-placed finish is testament to the work Stefano Piolo has done since replacing Marco Giampaolo at the San Siro, lifting them from 16th upon his arrival. In particular, post-lockdown, only Real Madrid and Atalanta have collected more points than AC Milan’s 27 across Europe’s top five leagues.

They face a Cagliari side who also have very little to play for. They are far away from the relegation battle, though a top-half finish is still a possibility thanks to their 2-0 win over champions Juventus.

However, history is not on their side. AC Milan have beaten Cagliari more times than any other Serie A side, winning 41 of their matches in a run that has also included 15 straight home wins.

AC Milan & Cagliari’s previous line-ups:

  • AC Milan (vs Sampdoria): Donnarumma; Calabria, Kjaer, Gabbia, Hernandez; Bennacer, Kessie; Saelemaekers, Calhanoglu, Rebic*; Ibrahimovic.
  • Cagliari (vs Juventus): Cragno; Walukiewicz, Ceppitelli, Klavan; Farago, Ionita, Rog*, Mattiello; Joao Pedro; Gagliano, Simeone.

AC Milan will have to make do without Ante Rebic for the final day of the season, with the winger suspended after receiving his fifth yellow card against Sampdoria. Marko Rog is also suspended for Cagliari, for accumulating 10 yellow cards.

Player to watch:

AC Milan have a handful of exciting young players among their ranks but once again it is the veteran Zlatan Ibrahimovic writing the headlines. The 38-year-old returned to Milan in January after the end of the MLS season but is already the club’s second-highest scorer of the season.

In Milan’s 4-1 win over Sampdoria, Ibrahimovic scored twice to take his tally to nine, behind only Ante Rebic among the Rossoneri squad. His performances in front of goal have seen Ibrahimovic move closer to penning a longer-term deal at Milan, having initially signed until the end of the 2019/20 campaign.

According to reports, Milan are ready to offer Ibrahimovic a two-year deal that would take him into his 40s. But that wouldn’t be a problem for the Swedish striker, who recently compared himself to the reverse-ageing fictional character Benjamin Button.

“People tell me I’m old and tired but I’m just getting warmed up,” he said after his brace against Sampdoria, which moved him to within one goal of double figures.

“I’m like Benjamin Button. I’ve always been young, never old.”

Should Ibrahimovic score this weekend, it would be 13th season since 2004/05 in which the Swedish striker has scored at least 10 goals. During that same timeframe, only Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo (both 14) have achieved the feat on more occasions.
