Zach Werenski won as the first Columbus player to take the award, having opened the season at +1100. Points are the signal the vote has historically followed, though the shot-suppression case is the one that wins arguments and loses ballots. The norris trophy odds above price reputation as much as production.

Odds movement: what the opening board says

Makar is the default favourite, as he has been for most of five years. Hughes at +400 is the interesting price. He won the trophy in 2024 with Vancouver, was traded to Minnesota in December 2025, and now runs a power play on a team that expects to contend. Werenski sits third as the defending winner, which is where defending winners usually sit: nobody has won consecutive Norris Trophies since Lidstrom in 2008.

Two names further down matter to Canadian bettors. Lane Hutson at +1000 gives Montréal a live candidate in his second full season. And Evan Bouchard at +1200 is the market pricing in the 2026 snub. He led every defenceman in the league with 95 points, on 21 goals and 74 assists across all 82 games, and did not make the final three. If the voters would not reward that, the price says, what would he have to do? Jake Sanderson at +3000 is Ottawa’s entry, and Matthew Schaefer at +2000 is the Calder winner trying to become the first player since Bobby Orr to win both awards in consecutive seasons.

Ten years of Norris Trophy winners and their pre-season prices

Pre-season prices are the numbers each winner was available at before opening night, as recorded by odds-history archives. The 2018-19 opener is not on record.

Season

Winner

Team

Pre-season odds

2025-26

Zach Werenski

Columbus Blue Jackets

+1100

2024-25

Cale Makar

Colorado Avalanche

+250

2023-24

Quinn Hughes

Vancouver Canucks

+1000

2022-23

Erik Karlsson

San Jose Sharks

+8000

2021-22

Cale Makar

Colorado Avalanche

+400

2020-21

Adam Fox

New York Rangers

+3500

2019-20

Roman Josi

Nashville Predators

+1600

2018-19

Mark Giordano

Calgary Flames

not recorded

2017-18

Victor Hedman

Tampa Bay Lightning

+650

2016-17

Brent Burns

San Jose Sharks

+700

One winner in ten opened as the favourite: Makar in 2025 at +250. Five of the other nine were available at +1000 or longer in September, and two of those were enormous. Karlsson won at +8000 in 2023 on a San Jose team that finished near the bottom, and Fox won at +3500 in 2021 in his second NHL season. The defending champion has lost every year for a decade. Both facts point the same way: this market rewards the second and third names on the board far more often than the first.

The 2026 vote: Werenski, Makar and Dahlin

The three 2026 nominees show what a Norris case looks like when it works.

Zach Werenski, Columbus. 22 goals and 81 points in 75 games, second among defencemen in scoring, and 26:37 of ice time a night, second in the whole league. He was also the Blue Jackets’ leading scorer by fourteen points, which almost never happens for a defenceman. First Columbus player to win the award.

Cale Makar, Colorado. 20 goals and 79 points in 75 games, his third consecutive season with 20 or more goals, and a sixth finalist nomination in seven NHL seasons.

Rasmus Dahlin, Buffalo. A career-high 74 points on 19 goals and 55 assists in 77 games, 24:11 a night as captain, and the first Sabres finalist since Jim Schoenfeld in 1980.

And the case that did not work. Evan Bouchard’s Norris Trophy season was 95 points, the most by any defenceman, on a team that reached the Cup Final the two previous springs. He finished outside the top three. Voters weighed Edmonton’s defensive record and his own reputation without the puck, and that is the clearest recent evidence that the ballot is not a scoring table.

What the voters actually reward

Points get a defenceman into the conversation. They do not settle it. The pattern across the last ten winners is three things at once: top-four scoring at the position, heavy minutes on the first pair and the first power-play unit, and a story the writers can tell about carrying a team. Werenski had all three in 2026. Bouchard had the first and part of the second.

Team quality matters less than bettors assume. Karlsson won in 2023 on a San Jose side that missed the playoffs by a distance, and Werenski won on a Columbus team that was not a contender. What those two shared was a scoring margin over their own teammates that made the narrative unavoidable. If you are handicapping the Norris by shot suppression alone, you are handicapping the wrong award. If you are handicapping it by points alone, Bouchard at +1200 is the price of that mistake.

How Norris Trophy voting works

The Professional Hockey Writers Association votes at the end of the regular season, before the playoffs begin, so postseason play has no bearing on the result. Each voter lists five defencemen in order, weighted 10, 7, 5, 3 and 1 points. The three finalists are announced during the playoffs and the winner in June at the NHL Awards. Because the ballot rewards depth of support rather than first-place votes alone, a player who is second on most ballots can beat one who is first on a few and absent from the rest.

What is the Norris Trophy?

The James Norris Memorial Trophy has been awarded since the 1953-54 season to the defenceman who shows the greatest all-round ability at the position across the regular season. It is named for James E. Norris, the former owner of the Detroit Red Wings, and the first winner was Detroit’s Red Kelly in 1954. Boston have produced more winners than any franchise, with 14, and Montréal are next on 12.

Norris Trophy records worth knowing

Most wins: Bobby Orr, eight, all consecutive, from 1968 to 1975 with Boston. Doug Harvey and Nicklas Lidstrom have seven each.

Most among active players: Erik Karlsson, three, with Ottawa in 2012 and 2015 and San Jose in 2023. Cale Makar has two. They are the only active defencemen with more than one.

Last repeat winner: Lidstrom, three straight from 2006 to 2008. Nobody has defended the trophy since.

Longest price to win: Karlsson at +8000 in 2022-23, on the recorded pre-season odds.

Norris and Cup in the same season: Makar in 2022, one of only three players to do it this century.

Franchise totals: Boston 14, Montréal 12.

How to bet the Norris market

Fade the summer favourite. One winner in ten opened favourite. Two or three names between +400 and +1200 have beaten one at +300 in nine of the last ten years.

Fade the defending champion. Werenski at +550 is the shortest price on a player with no repeat winner behind him since 2008.

Check the minutes, not just the points. Every recent winner played first-pair minutes and ran the top power-play unit. A defenceman who loses that unit in October is out of the race.

Apply the Bouchard filter. Ask whether the writers can tell a story about the player carrying his team. Scoring on a stacked roster gets discounted; scoring as a team’s leading scorer gets rewarded.

Re-check at American Thanksgiving. By late November the field is usually four names and the longshots have either separated or fallen away.

Hold the stake in mind. Money is tied up until June. Our futures betting guide covers how that affects sizing.

The Calder market is the natural companion for Schaefer and Hutson, both of whom arrived through it. Hart Trophy odds share the same electorate, which is why a defenceman rarely features there.
