Single-game wagers became legal across the country in August 2021. What changed after that was not the law but the shopfront: Ontario and Alberta opened to private sportsbooks, while most provinces still route every bet through the lottery corporation. This hub covers the markets, the provincial rules, how to bet on hockey without the common mistakes, and the season-long pages we run through 2026-27.

Detail

Value

2026-27 regular season

Under way since 29 September 2026 (84 games per team)

Reigning champion

Carolina Hurricanes (2026)

Main markets

Moneyline, puck line, totals, props, futures, live betting

Open private markets

Ontario and Alberta only

Everywhere else

Provincial lottery operator only

Legal age

19+, or 18+ in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec

Default odds format

American (+150, -110)

How NHL betting works in Canada

Bill C-218 came into force on 27 August 2021 and removed the Criminal Code ban on single-event wagering. Before that, a hockey bet had to be part of a multi-leg parlay through a provincial lottery product. Now you can back one game on its own. Provinces decide who may offer it, which is why the answer to “where can I bet on the NHL” depends entirely on your postal code. Our guide to sports betting law in Canada sets out the full picture.

NHL betting Canada: the province by province picture

Two provinces run open markets. The rest do not. Promoting a private operator to a reader in British Columbia or Quebec would be pointing them at something they cannot legally use, so we do not do it.

Province

Market model

Regulator or operator

Age

Ontario

Open private market

AGCO with iGaming Ontario

19+

Alberta

Open private market since 13 July 2026

AGLC with Alberta iGaming Corp

18+

British Columbia

Provincial monopoly

BCLC (PlayNow)

19+

Manitoba

Provincial monopoly

MBLL (PlayNow)

18+

Saskatchewan

Provincial monopoly

SLGA

19+

Quebec

Provincial monopoly

Loto-Québec (Mise-o-jeu+)

18+

Atlantic provinces

Provincial monopoly

Atlantic Lottery

19+

Alberta joined Ontario on 13 July 2026, and it adopted Ontario-style advertising rules at the same time. Our Alberta betting sites guide tracks that market. If you are in Ontario, the sportsbook comparison covers the AGCO-registered operators.

Where to bet on the NHL

The honest answer for most of the country is: through your province’s lottery operator, because that is the only legal option. PlayNow in British Columbia and Manitoba, Mise-o-jeu+ in Quebec, the Atlantic Lottery sites and SLGA in Saskatchewan all carry moneyline, puck line, totals and a growing props menu, priced in decimal by default. Their futures boards are thinner than the private books’ and their parlay pricing is worse, which is the trade-off for a monopoly.

In Ontario and Alberta you can hold accounts at several licensed sportsbooks. That changes how you bet more than any strategy does. Line shopping, which we cover below, only exists where there is more than one line to shop, and our ranking of NHL betting sites in Canada compares the licensed operators while the betting apps guide covers which ones are worth having on your phone.

The NHL markets worth knowing

Six market types carry almost all the hockey volume. Each one behaves differently on a low-scoring sport, which is the part most new bettors miss.

Moneyline

A straight pick on the winner, including overtime and the shootout. Hockey moneylines sit closer together than in other sports because one goal decides so many games, so a heavy favourite is rarer than it looks. See our moneyline guide.

Puck line

The hockey spread, almost always set at 1.5 goals. The favourite must win by two. Empty-net goals decide a large share of these, which is why the price on the favourite is usually plus money and why the underdog at plus 1.5 is a short-priced bet. Full detail in the puck line guide.

Totals

Over or under on combined goals, usually 5.5 or 6. Goaltending and rest matter more than reputation here, and the number rarely moves more than half a goal in a day. See over/under betting.

Props

Shots on goal, points, saves and anytime goalscorer. Shots on goal is the most predictable of them because volume is stable and goals are not. Read the props guide before you touch these.

Futures

Season-long markets: the Cup, the division, the individual trophies. Our futures guide explains how the money is tied up, and our Stanley Cup odds and NHL awards odds pages carry the current boards.

Live betting

In-play prices on the moneyline, the puck line and the total, refreshed after every stoppage, plus period markets and next-goal markets. Live betting on hockey rewards two situations above all others: a pulled goaltender in the final two minutes, when the empty net makes the over and the favourite’s puck line live again, and a five-minute major, when a power play changes the total more than the price moves. Cash-out is offered on most live positions and is priced against you; use it to manage a position, not as a habit.

How to read NHL odds: a worked example

Canadian sportsbooks show American odds by default, and the lottery operators show decimal. The two say the same thing. Take a game priced Toronto -140 against Montréal +120 on the moneyline.

Toronto -140. You risk $140 to win $100 in profit. A $50 bet returns $35.71 in profit plus your stake. In decimal that price reads 1.71.

Montréal +120. You risk $100 to win $120 in profit. A $50 bet returns $60 in profit plus your stake. In decimal that price reads 2.20.

What the prices imply. -140 implies a 58.3 per cent chance and +120 implies 45.5 per cent. They add to 103.8 per cent, and the 3.8 points above 100 are the sportsbook’s margin on the game.

The margin is why line shopping matters. The same game at -135 and +125 at another book is 3.0 points of margin instead of 3.8, and that difference compounds over a season. Our odds guide goes deeper on formats and implied probability.

How to bet on hockey: NHL betting strategy that survives a season

Hockey rewards patience more than most sports. Goals are scarce, one hot goaltender flips a series, and the public piles onto the same handful of teams every night. The habits below do most of the work, and none of them require a model.

Wait for the starting goaltender

Confirmed starters often arrive late on game day, and a backup behind a good team changes the total and the moneyline together. The gap between a starter and a backup on save percentage is worth more than most home-ice advantages. Betting a total before the goalies are confirmed is guessing. Our projected NHL starting goalies page carries a projected starter for every game on the slate, with the reasoning and a confidence rating beside each one, and our NHL injury report is rebuilt every morning and lists every goalie and skater already ruled out. Check both before you price a game.

Respect the schedule

Back-to-backs, the second half of a long road trip and travel across three time zones all show up in the third period. A team playing its fourth game in six nights is a fade candidate regardless of the standings, and the schedule is public months in advance.

Shop the line

In Ontario and Alberta you can hold accounts at several sportsbooks, and half a goal on the puck line or ten cents on a moneyline is the difference over a season. Use all of them. If you can only bet through a lottery operator, the equivalent discipline is timing: prices there move less, so a stale number after a goalie announcement is your edge.

Understand the puck line price

The favourite at minus 1.5 is usually plus money because so many one-goal games end with an empty-net goal or a late tying goal. Check the habit first. Before taking a favourite on the puck line, ask whether the team protects leads or sits on them; before taking an underdog at plus 1.5, remember you are laying a heavy price for a bet that loses to one empty-netter.

Manage the bankroll like a season, not a night

Flat stakes of one to two per cent of your bankroll, tracked in a spreadsheet, beat every staking system on offer. The Kelly criterion, which sizes bets to your edge, is worth knowing about and dangerous to use, because it assumes you know your edge and most bettors overstate it. Our bankroll management guide covers the arithmetic.

Be careful with same game parlays

Correlated legs feel clever and price badly. An NHL same game parlay that pairs a team’s moneyline with the over pays less than the two bets placed separately would, because the sportsbook prices the correlation and keeps the difference. Our parlay guide shows what the combination really costs.

If your province routes you through the lottery, the product looks different. Proline+ in Ontario and Sport Select elsewhere both price in decimal and lean on multi-leg tickets. We cover that in the Pro-Line and Sport Select guide.

Common NHL betting mistakes

Chasing big favourites on the moneyline. A -200 favourite in hockey wins about two games in three, which is roughly what the price says, so there is no edge in the reputation. The public overbets the famous team and the price drifts against you.

Betting totals before the starter is confirmed. The single most common avoidable error. The goaltender is the total.

Parlaying correlated legs. Moneyline plus over on the same team is one bet priced as two.

Treating last season’s standings as this season’s form. Rosters turn over, goaltenders age and the market already knows who finished where. Our weekly power rankings exist because the table from April is not the table in November.

Ignoring the puck line price. Taking a favourite at minus 1.5 for the payout without checking how often that team wins by two.

Buying futures at the shortest price. The pre-season favourite has won the Cup once in the last twelve years. Our Stanley Cup odds page shows what each champion opened at.

Not tracking results. If you cannot say what your record is on unders, you do not have a read on unders.

The 2026-27 season and what we are watching

Updated 22 October 2026. Carolina arrive as champions after beating Vegas 4-2 in the 2026 Final, with Jordan Staal taking the Conn Smythe at 37 and Nikita Kucherov the Hart. Canada?
Yes. Single-game sports betting has been legal nationwide since 27 August 2021, when Bill C-218 came into force. Each province decides who can offer it. Ontario and Alberta allow private sportsbooks, while other provinces route bets through their lottery corporation.

Where can I bet on the NHL in Canada?
In Ontario, through any AGCO-registered operator. In Alberta, through operators licensed by AGLC since 13 July 2026. In British Columbia and Manitoba, through PlayNow. In Quebec, through Mise-o-jeu+. In the Atlantic provinces, through Atlantic Lottery. Saskatchewan is served by SLGA.

How do you bet on hockey?
Start with the moneyline, a bet on which team wins including overtime. Then the puck line, hockey’s 1.5-goal spread, and the total, over or under a goals number of around 5.5 or 6. Wait for the starting goaltenders to be confirmed before you bet a total.

What is a puck line?
The puck line is hockey’s version of a point spread, and it is almost always set at 1.5 goals. Backing the favourite on the puck line means they need to win by two or more. Empty-net goals settle many of these bets.

What does -140 mean in hockey betting?
You risk $140 to win $100 in profit, and the price implies about a 58 per cent chance. The same price in decimal reads 1.71. Canadian sportsbooks show American odds by default and the lottery operators show decimal.

How old do I have to be to bet on hockey in Canada?
Nineteen in most provinces. Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec set the age at 18. The rule follows the province you are betting from, not the one you live in.

When did the 2026-27 NHL season start?
The regular season started on 29 September 2026, when Montreal won 3-2 at Toronto on a five-game opening night. Every team plays 84 games, and futures for the Cup and the individual awards stay open all season, with prices moving as results come in.

What is the most common NHL betting mistake?
Betting a total before the starting goaltenders are confirmed. A backup behind a good team moves both the total and the moneyline, and the confirmation often arrives only on game day.

Which Canadian sportsbook is best for hockey?
It depends on your province, because most Canadians have only one legal option. Where you do have a choice, in Ontario and Alberta, compare the depth of the props menu and how early the sportsbook posts its lines, not just the sign-up promotion.

19+ (18+ in AB, MB and QC).
