Negative numbers show what you risk to win $100: at -110, a $110 bet returns $100 in profit. Positive numbers show what $100 of risk wins you: at +150, a $100 bet returns $150. NFL games land on a margin of exactly 3 points more often than any other, with 7 close behind, because of how field goals and touchdowns score. The difference between a spread of -2.5 and -3.5 is much bigger than one point of spread elsewhere.
