NHL playoff odds are the market’s read on which of the 32 teams reach the Stanley Cup playoffs. They are priced two ways depending on the time of year. Before and during the regular season you are betting a yes or no question on each club. Once the field is set in April, the same phrase means series prices. This page covers both.<\/p>\n

The 2026-27 season is the first at 84 games<\/strong> since 1993-94, which moves the qualifying bar for the first time in three decades. That matters more than it sounds, and the section below does the arithmetic.<\/p>\n\n

How NHL playoff odds work<\/h2>\n

Sixteen teams reach the playoffs, eight from each conference. The top three in each of the four divisions qualify automatically. That accounts for twelve places. The last four go to wild cards, two per conference, taken from whichever clubs have the most points regardless of division.<\/p>\n

NHL playoff odds price that outcome club by club. A short price means the market expects qualification. A long one means it does not. What the number cannot tell you is whether the club is short because it is genuinely good or short because it plays in a division where 92 points is enough, and separating those two things is most of the work.<\/p>\n

The structure is unchanged for 2026-27<\/a> despite the longer schedule. Divisions stay as they are: Atlantic and Metropolitan in the East, Central and Pacific in the West. What changed is that teams now play divisional rivals four times, which is where the two extra games come from.<\/p>\n

What 84 games does to the qualifying bar<\/h2>\n

Two extra games sounds trivial. It is not. The cutline is a points total, and points totals scale with games played. Every benchmark you have seen quoted for making the playoffs was set over 82 games.<\/p>\n

Last season the Eastern cutline was Ottawa on 99 points. That is a rate of 1.21 points per game. Hold that rate across 84 games and the same team finishes on roughly 101 points<\/strong>. In the West, Los Angeles took the final spot on 90 points, a rate of 1.10, which projects to about 92 points<\/strong> over the longer schedule.<\/p>\n

So the working number for 2026-27 is around 101 in the East and 92 in the West. Treat those as a reference, not a forecast. One weak division moves them. The first year of any format change tends to produce results nobody modelled, and playoff odds set in September carry that uncertainty in the price.<\/p>\n

What it took to qualify last season<\/h2>\n

Both conferences finished with the same four-point gap between the last team in and the first team out. That is tighter than it usually looks in March. It is also the best argument for taking a position on NHL playoff odds early.<\/p>\n\n

The nine-point difference between the two cutlines is the more useful number. A Western club needed materially less to qualify. If that imbalance holds, the same projected point total should carry different playoff odds depending on the conference.<\/p>\n

Where the seven Canadian teams stand<\/h2>\n

Only three of the seven Canadian clubs reached the 2026 playoffs. Four did not. That is the context for every Canadian price on the board this year.<\/p>\n\n

Two of those lines deserve attention. Toronto finished 28th with a goal difference of minus 46, and while a club with that roster will always be shorter than its finish suggests, minus 46 is not the profile of a team a couple of bounces from a wild card. Vancouver were worse. They finished last in the league on 58 points at minus 100, the worst differential in the NHL by 38 goals.<\/p>\n

Montréal were the strongest Canadian side and the only one with a top-six finish. Ottawa qualified through the wild card and carried a better goal difference than Edmonton, who finished higher. Our NHL power rankings<\/a> track how that order changes once games are played.<\/p>\n

How to bet the qualifying market<\/h2>\n

The market posts a yes and a no price for each club. The two sides carry very different value at different times. Three things are worth knowing before you take one.<\/p>\n

Goal difference reads better than points.<\/strong> A team that outscores its opposition over a full season and finishes just outside is a more credible bounce-back than a team that scraped the same points total on one-goal wins. Ottawa at plus 32 and Detroit at minus 17 finished nine points apart last season and are not comparable propositions.<\/p>\n

Goaltending moves playoff odds more than scoring.<\/strong> Qualifying races are decided by save percentage more often than by forward depth. An injury to a starter is the most damaging thing that can happen to a qualifying bet. Check our NHL injury report<\/a> before taking a position.<\/p>\n

The conference matters.<\/strong> Nine points separated the two cutlines last season. A projected 95-point team is a comfortable qualifier in the West and a coin flip in the East.<\/p>\n

When playoff odds move, and when series prices open<\/h2>\n

Series prices appear once the field is set in April. They move faster than any other hockey market. Books post a first-round line within hours of the last regular-season game, then reprice on goaltending news and home ice.<\/p>\n

Qualifying markets run the other way. They open before the season and stay available all winter, shortening or drifting with every result. The widest NHL playoff odds of the year are on the board right now. That is the argument for an early position if you have a view. It is also the argument against one, because 84 games is a long time to be wrong.<\/p>\n
