Mackie Samoskevich scored twice on his return from injured reserve.<\/strong> Seattle led 3-0 after the first through Berkly Catton, Samoskevich and Bobby McMann, and added three more. Morgan Frost got Calgary’s only goal. Joey Daccord made 32 saves.<\/p>\n

Our pick: Seattle. Correct<\/strong>, and by more than we expected. The score prediction was 3-2; it finished 6-1. The under at 6 missed with seven goals.<\/p>\n

Flames vs Kraken is the second meeting between these two in four days, and both teams arrive on the back end of a back-to-back.<\/p>\n

Seattle plays in Edmonton on Saturday night and Calgary plays in Vancouver, so neither team has slept in its own bed much this week. Sunday is also Seattle’s home opener, three nights after a 6-1 win in Calgary.<\/p>\n\n

Flames vs Kraken odds<\/h2>\n

The Canadian books had not posted a price for this game when we checked on 1 October. We will add the board once it lands. Live prices across the league are on our NHL odds<\/a> page.<\/p>\n

This is a rematch, and the first one was three days earlier<\/h2>\n

Seattle was in Calgary on Thursday for the Flames’ home opener, which we previewed separately on our Kraken vs Flames<\/a> page. Seattle won it 6-1. Vince Dunn scored once and set up two, and Dustin Wolf was beaten six times. This is the return, in Seattle, with both sides having played again in between.<\/p>\n\n

Three games in four nights for both clubs, and a second look at an opponent they have just seen. Systems and matchups carry over in a way they don’t in most October games.<\/p>\n

Calgary isn’t the team it was in March<\/h2>\n

The Flames took 77 points and finished 29th at minus 47, and then kept changing. Nazem Kadri went to Colorado and MacKenzie Weegar to Utah<\/strong>, both during last season. Rasmus Andersson is in Vegas.<\/p>\n

What came back is younger and cheaper. Ryan Strome, Jake Middleton, Zach Whitecloud and Simon Nemec fill out the lineup, and Zayne Parekh, born in 2006, already has 37 NHL games<\/strong> on his record.<\/p>\n

Matt Coronato led the scoring on 45 points, though at minus 29. Mikael Backlund was the only forward of consequence on the right side of even, at plus seven on 43 points. Morgan Frost matched him on 43 and Joel Farabee added 38.<\/p>\n

Jonathan Huberdeau is out.<\/strong> He’s on injured reserve with the hip problem that cost him the last 26 games of last season, and there’s no timetable for his return.<\/p>\n

Last season’s rates, which travel better from one year to the next than a record does.<\/p>\n

Calgary’s goaltending is better than its record<\/h2>\n

Dustin Wolf went 23-29-3 behind a team that conceded 259 goals<\/strong>, holding a .899 save percentage while facing more shots than almost anyone. That’s the best reason to think Calgary improves on 29th.<\/p>\n

The interesting wrinkle is Devin Cooley. He played 31 games and finished with a 2.69 goals-against average and a .909 save percentage<\/strong>, both better than Wolf’s, so Sunday’s starter is an open question.<\/p>\n

Seattle finished two points better and has kept its core<\/h2>\n

The Kraken finished 27th on 79 points at minus 37, two ahead of Calgary, and most of that roster is back.<\/p>\n

Jared McCann scored 20 goals in 52 games.<\/strong> Brandon Montour put up 32 points on a blue line that also has Adam Larsson and Ryan Lindgren back, and Bobby McMann scored 29 goals<\/strong> across Toronto and Seattle after a March trade, then signed a six-year extension rather than test free agency.<\/p>\n

The holdovers still carry it. Jordan Eberle led them on 55 points at 36 years old. Matty Beniers reached 50 across all 82 games. Chandler Stephenson added 49 and Vince Dunn 44 from defence, though both at minus 24.<\/p>\n

Kaapo Kakko remains the outlier.<\/strong> Forty points in 65 games at plus 14, the only meaningful positive on a team that conceded 37 more than it scored.<\/p>\n

In goal, Joey Daccord took the bulk of the work at 20-20-6 and .897. Philipp Grubauer was the better of the two across 32 games at 2.65 and .909.<\/p>\n

Calgary Flames 2-3 Seattle Kraken.<\/strong> Seattle has won the last three meetings by a combined 15-3, including 6-1 on Thursday, and is at home. Calgary is without Huberdeau, and both teams are on the second night of a back-to-back.<\/p>\n

Flames vs Kraken prediction<\/h2>\n

Two points separated these clubs last season and neither came close to a playoff place. On paper this is close to a coin flip.<\/p>\n

The tilt goes to Seattle, at home and on a run of three straight wins over Calgary by a combined 12 goals. The Flames arrive without Huberdeau and with a roster that has lost its two most recognizable names since last spring.<\/p>\n

Against that, both teams are equally tired, and Calgary’s goaltending is the better of the two by the numbers. A back-to-back cuts both ways when both sides are on one.<\/p>\n
