Result: Vancouver Canucks 4-1 Calgary Flames<\/h2>\n

Vancouver scored four in the third.<\/strong> Matt Coronato had put Calgary ahead in the first and it stayed 1-0 until the final period, when Liam Ohgren, Elias Pettersson, Drew O’Connor and Aatu Räty all scored. Leevi Meriläinen made 23 saves on his way to second star.<\/p>\n

Our pick: Calgary. Wrong.<\/strong> We had Vancouver as the weaker side on last season’s numbers and they won by three. The over at 6 also missed, with five goals.<\/p>\n

Both of these clubs were beaten at home on Thursday, and neither was close. Seattle won 6-1 at the Saddledome. Vancouver lost 9-7 to Edmonton in the highest-scoring game of the season so far.<\/p>\n

Flames vs Canucks is the first meeting of the season between the teams that finished 29th and 32nd last year, and the opening week has not suggested either problem is fixed.<\/p>\n

Vancouver’s minus 100 was the worst goal difference in the NHL and 53 worse than Calgary’s. That is the gap this fixture starts from, and it is why the Flames are likely to be favoured on the road.<\/p>\n

Calgary: better than last season suggests<\/h2>\n

The Flames were bad, but not as bad as 29th. Matt Coronato led them on 45 points, Mikael Backlund and Morgan Frost tied on 43, and Joel Farabee added 38. Five forwards reached 29 or more.<\/p>\n

The problem was defensive. MacKenzie Weegar finished at minus 35. Nazem Kadri was minus 27 in 61 games. Dustin Wolf went 23-29-3 behind them at .899, a respectable number on a team that conceded this often.<\/p>\n

Jonathan Huberdeau is on injured reserve<\/strong> with a hip problem and is not expected back until around 10 October, so he misses this one.<\/p>\n

Vancouver: the worst team in hockey last season<\/h2>\n

Fifty-eight points. Minus 100. Twenty-five wins in 82 games. It was the worst season any Canadian club has had in a decade, and the numbers underneath it were no kinder than the table.<\/p>\n

Brock Boeser finished at minus 48, Jake DeBrusk minus 31 and Elias Pettersson, the centre, minus 30. Filip Hronek led the team in scoring from the blue line on 49 points and was still minus 23. Quinn Hughes appeared in 26 games before the move that took him to Minnesota, and Vancouver has not replaced him.<\/p>\n

In goal, Kevin Lankinen went 11-27-5 with a .875 save percentage. Thatcher Demko opens the season on injured reserve<\/strong> with a hip injury, so Lankinen starts again.<\/p>\n

Vancouver won the first comfortably. Then they lost the next two by a combined 12-5. Calgary scored seven in the last one.<\/p>\n

Players to watch<\/h2>\n

Matt Coronato.<\/strong> Forty-five points last season, the most on Calgary. He did it while finishing at minus 29, which tells you how the Flames played rather than how he did.<\/p>\n

Dustin Wolf.<\/strong> A .899 save percentage behind that team is the single most encouraging number Calgary produced. He faced more rubber than almost any goaltender in the league and held up.<\/p>\n

Marco Rossi.<\/strong> He scored twice in Thursday’s 9-7 loss to Edmonton. He arrived from Minnesota during last season and put up 35 points across the two clubs, and Vancouver needs that version of him far more than it needed a third-line centre.<\/p>\n

Kevin Lankinen.<\/strong> Eleven wins in 47 appearances. He is not the reason Vancouver were last, but he was not the solution either.<\/p>\n

Flames vs Canucks prediction<\/h2>\n

Calgary is the better side, and the more settled one. Vancouver starts a goaltender who conceded at 3.70 a game last season, behind a defence that shipped 100 more goals than it scored, and there is no version of that which reads well on paper.<\/p>\n

The caution is simple. Vancouver is at home, and it did score seven on Thursday. All three meetings last season went over five goals, the totals running 6, 7 and 10, and nothing either defence has shown this week argues for a quiet night.<\/p>\n
