Connor Hellebuyck wants a trade out of Winnipeg. The Jets suspended their goaltender when he did not report to training camp on September 17. As of September 25, there is still no deal. General manager Kevin Cheveldayoff says no doors are closed. Hellebuyck will not waive his no-movement clause for another Canadian team, and the Jets open at home to Boston on October 2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Below is how it got here and what last season’s numbers say about the goalie Winnipeg would be trading. Then come his contract, the teams linked to him and where a Hellebuyck trade could go next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why did Connor Hellebuyck request a trade?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Hellebuyck says he asked for a trade privately several months before going public on August 27<\/a>. In a statement through his agent, he said he had tried to handle it quietly. Moving on, he said, was “the best path forward for me and my family.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reasons go back to the spring. After the 2025-26 season, he questioned whether Winnipeg can land the players it needs to contend. Most of the league, he said, does not share his fondness for the city. The Jets had just finished 26th on 82 points and missed the playoffs. A year earlier, they won the Presidents’ Trophy with franchise records for wins and points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cheveldayoff rejects any suggestion that the club made promises when Hellebuyck signed his extension in October 2023. There are no side agreements, he said, and the contract stands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last season was the weakest of his career as a starter. His .895 save percentage ranked 19th of the 29 goalies who played at least 40 games. It was also the first season of his NHL career without a shutout. The year before, he won the Hart<\/a> and the Vezina<\/a> with a .925 save percentage and a 2.00 goals-against average. The knee was part of it. He had surgery on November 22 after playing through the problem since training camp. But the Olympic high did not carry over either. He stopped .913 of shots in 14 starts before the surgery. Between his return and the Olympic break, that fell to .890 in 22 starts. After the Games, it was .887 in 21 starts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Winnipeg were a .500 team whether he played or not. The Jets took 57 points from his 57 starts (23-23-11). In the other 25 games, they took 25 points (12-12-1).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hellebuyck’s contract: what the no-movement clause means for a trade<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Hellebuyck is in the third year of a seven-year, $59.5 million contract that runs through 2030-31. It carries an $8.5 million cap hit, 8.2% of this season’s $104 million salary cap. He has already been paid $20 million, so $39.5 million is still owed over the last five seasons. His salary peaks at $10 million in 2027-28, then falls to $6 million in the final year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For this season, the full no-movement clause means no Hellebuyck trade can happen without his approval. On July 1, 2027, it becomes a modified no-trade clause with a 10-team list, which would give the Jets far more room to move him next summer. Whoever takes him on is committing to that $8.5 million cap hit until he is 38. Winnipeg could retain up to half of it in a trade to widen the market, but they would then be paying part of his salary for five more seasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He will not approve a move to another Canadian club. TSN’s Darren Dreger reported it first, and Cheveldayoff has since confirmed it. That rules out Edmonton and Montr\u00e9al, two teams floated as fits for a starting goalie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The suspension has not cost him salary yet, because NHL players are not paid during training camp. That changes when the regular season starts on September 29. A suspended player forfeits his pay for each day he is out. Spread across the 194 days of the regular season, his $7.5 million salary works out to about $38,700 a day, or roughly $89,000 per game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where could a Hellebuyck trade send him?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Two deals have reportedly come close. On his 32 Thoughts podcast, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman said Florida offered Evan Rodrigues, another roster player and first-round picks, including the Nos. 9 and 25 picks in this year’s draft. Winnipeg said no. Those picks later went to Ottawa for Brady Tkachuk, Rodrigues went to New Jersey in the Jacob Markstrom trade, and Florida moved on with Markstrom in goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Buffalo also got close to a Hellebuyck trade around the June draft, according to Friedman. The sticking point was the picks: Winnipeg wanted the Sabres’ No. 4 selection while keeping their own No. 8, and Buffalo would only deal if the two clubs swapped picks inside the top 10. Sabres goalie Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, who could have gone the other way, is also believed to have Winnipeg on his no-trade list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Utah, Carolina and San Jose have been linked since. New Jersey came up after trading Markstrom, but general manager Sunny Mehta says he is comfortable with Jake Allen in goal. The Jets have confirmed none of this, and Cheveldayoff says no offer so far has met both clubs’ needs. He also points to a practical problem: teams with an established starter rarely chase another one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the last three seasons combined, Hellebuyck has stopped .914 of the shots he faced. None of those goalies matched that in 2025-26, and that gap is what any team chasing a Hellebuyck trade would be paying for. Carolina, for their part, won the Stanley Cup<\/a> in June with Bussi and Andersen sharing the regular season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Canadian angle: the goalie who beat Canada<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For Canadian fans, the story has an extra edge. Hellebuyck was born in Commerce, Michigan, and made 41 saves as the United States beat Canada for Olympic gold in February. One of them was a first-period breakaway stop on Connor McDavid. Now he will not accept a trade to any of the six other Canadian teams. In Montr\u00e9al it may be moot anyway: the Canadiens already have three goalies, and a Montr\u00e9al podcast has reported they never called about him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is also a familiar story in Winnipeg. Jacob Trouba asked out in 2016 and eventually went to the Rangers. Patrik Laine asked for a trade and moved to Columbus in 2021. Evander Kane went to Buffalo in 2015 after falling out with the club. Hellebuyck is different in one way, though. Winnipeg drafted him in the fifth round, 130th overall, in 2012, and all 625 of his regular-season games have come for the Jets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What happens next for the Jets<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Stuart Skinner is the likely starter while Hellebuyck is away. Winnipeg signed the 27-year-old on July 1 to a two-year deal worth $3.75 million a year. Last season he went 23-17-9 with a .888 save percentage for Edmonton and Pittsburgh. He also started for the Oilers in the 2024 and 2025 Stanley Cup Final. Domenic DiVincentiis and Thomas Milic are the other goalies in camp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Captain Adam Lowry has said the situation will resolve itself one way or the other. There are three ways it can. The Jets find a trade Hellebuyck approves. The standoff runs into the season and starts costing him salary. Or it drags on until next July, when his clause softens and Winnipeg gain far more freedom to deal him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
