Club Description

Initially founded as the West Bromwich Strollers in 1878 by spring workers, West Bromwich Albion were officially formed in 1880 and turned professional in 1885. They won their first trophy in 1888: pipping favourites Preston North End to the FA Cup.

The Baggies enjoyed much early success and won the First Division title in 1919-20. They also, curiously, became the only team to win promotion and the FA Cup in the same season in 1930-31.

West Brom became a fixture of the top flight during a 24 year stint and although their league form remained unimpressive, the Baggies developed a reputation as a quality cup side, reaching numerous domestic finals. During the 1970’s however, the club enjoyed mixed fortunes as they were relegated before enjoying promotion under Ron Atkinson and a UEFA Cup run to the quarter final.

Despite being one of the most consistent teams in the top flight of English football, The Baggies haven’t been able to stamp their authority on the Premier League, becoming the defining example of a “yo-yo” club, having been relegated and promoted 4 times since the inception of the breakaway league.

West Brom are now under the management of serial assistant manager Steve Clarke.
