Club Description

Arsenal were originally founded as Dial Square in 1886 by a group of workers employed by the Dial Square workshop at the Royal Arsenal in Woolwich, London. They were controversially elected to the First Division in 1919 at the expense of North London rivals TottenhamHotspur.

Early success at the Highbury ground under the revolutionary guidance of Herbert Chapman, aided by the goal-scoring prowess of Cliff Bastin gave them a solid base to build upon. Never relegated from the top flight, they have enjoyed further periods of domestic success under George Graham and more recently, Arsène Wenger.

While Scotsman Graham was noted for his teams' defensive tactics and rugged solidity; the French-born Wenger brought entirely new tactics and a legion of foreign talent such as Dennis Bergkamp, Thierry Henry and Patrick Vieira which propelled the club to two double-winning seasons and the unbeaten season of the "Invincibles”.

Despite never winning a top European trophy, Arsenal have been one of the most consistent teams in the Champions League since Wenger's arrival. They have since moved from their Highbury home to the state of the art Emirates stadium holding over 60000 people.
