Ibrahimovic was signed to help psychologically manipulate Man Utd players – Jose Mourinho
Ibrahimovic has made a tremendous impact since joining United on a free transfer last summer – he has scored 26 goals in all competitions and helped the club to win the EFL Cup.
Mourinho explained that he made it a priority to bring in Ibrahimovic as United no longer have the same characters in the dressing room as they previously did.
As reported by Goal, Mourinho said: “You have to adapt to the reality of the club, its needs and its demands. It is called being intelligent. The priority is to establish relations of peace and love in a group, to create stability.
“Manchester United no longer has the super personalities like Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes or Roy Keane.
“There is Wayne Rooney and Michael Carrick, who are the last faces of that generation and a new squad of players has to adapt.
“That is why it was important for me to get Zlatan. In this team, he had, without being English, without knowing the culture of the club, the personality and the profile to be more than just a simple player.
“Mind games, which involve trying to manipulate someone psychologically through the media, are a way to create a state of thinking, but they’re most effective when you have a team full of personalities who are ready to take that kind of talk on board.”
Ibrahimovic is currently missing through suspension, but many of his performances this campaign have been outstanding. It isn’t just his goalscoring exploits that have been in evidence this season, with the attacker having also impressed with his link-up play, creating 44 chances in the Premier League.
The 35-year-old will hope to help United secure a top four finish this season, while the club are also still in contention to win the Europa League.
