Liverpool are planning a shock move for Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku as Brendan Rodgers looks to replace Luis Suarez, according to reports.
Lukaku’s future is up in the air with Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho reportedly not keen on keeping the Belgian forward at the club. With no confidence in the former Everton loanee, Mourinho signed up Diego Costa last month making Lukaku’s job even harder at Stamford Bridge.
With Everton keen on bringing the former Anderlecht striker back to Goodison Park, Brendan Rodgers could look to hijack the deal with a deal in the region of £26 million.
Reports emerged over the weekend that Rodgers will be presented with full £75 million from the Luis Suarez transfer, in-order to reinvest back in the squad. A number of players are now targets for the Reds, including Romelu Lukaku, Mario Balotelli and Angel Di Maria.
Rodgers’ close relationship with Mourinho could play a part in negotiating the deal, but Mourinho will be wary after the transfer of Sturridge to Anfield which reaped dividends for the England international.
Rodgers spent four years at Chelsea working as youth team and then reserve team coach, which could work in the Northern Irishman’s favour.
Lukaku won just 39% of his duels at the World Cup for Belgium.
