Liverpool backed to beat and prevent Man Utd from scoring despite two clean sheets this season

Liverpool will keep a clean sheet and record a victory over Manchester United, Phil Thompson has predicted.

As the Premier League returns after a two-week absence, arguably the biggest game across the weekend takes place at Anfield on Saturday afternoon as two of English football’s biggest clubs renew their historic rivalry.

Given the recent form of the two teams, the Red Devils are likely to start the game as slight favourites, but Thompson has backed his former club to continue their impressive record agains the stronger teams across the division.

“I’m very confident – it’s what we [Liverpool] do,” he told Sky Sports.

“Liverpool turn up in the big games. It’s going to be an absolute battle but if you look at a lot of our players, they raise their game.

“Dare I say it, but I think there’s a good chance of a Liverpool clean sheet. I fancy us as it’s here at Anfield and I think it’ll be a Liverpool victory.”

Liverpool have conceded 12 goals in seven Premier League appearances this season.

The Reds’ record against the top-six (Manchester United, Manchester City, Tottenham, Chelsea and Arsenal) is very good. In fact, they top that mini-league since Jurgen Klopp’s appointment in October 2015 and have lost just twice in 20 games against their main rivals.

However, they’ve failed to keep a clean sheet across any competition since beating Arsenal 4-0 at the end of August and are facing a United side that has netted 21 times in the top flight of English football so far this season.
