Jordan Henderson: Philippe Coutinho is one of Liverpool’s “quiet leaders”

Philippe Coutinho has been hailed as “world-class” by Liverpool teammate Jordan Henderson, with the playmaker’s leadership ability highlighted.

The Brazil international signed a new long-term contract with Liverpool last week, halting the transfer speculation which has followed his excellent performances.

Indeed, Coutinho has cemented his status as the Reds’ star player in recent seasons, while notching five goals and five assists in 16 Premier League games this term.

Under new boss Tite, the 24-year-old has also regained a place in his national team’s starting XI this season, starring alongside the likes of Neymar.

However, being a strong presence in the dressing room is perhaps not a quality associated with Coutinho, but the Liverpool captain has now revealed he is a “quiet leader” who commands respect.

Henderson wrote for the Merseyside giants’ matchday programme: “Phil is world-class in every sense: ability, attitude, character, he’s the full package.

“Last week he made a big statement by saying he belongs at Liverpool. I’ve shared a dressing room with this player for a decent amount of time now and I can tell you he is as ambitious as any footballer I’ve ever met.

“Phil wants to win and win major titles. The fact he has committed to here is the biggest message you can get that we are in a positive situation.

“Phil is one of our ‘quiet’ leaders; someone who we, as players, admire for his actions rather than big chest-thumping speeches. But when he does speak it’s worth listening to.”

Both Coutinho and Henderson started in Liverpool’s draw against Chelsea on Tuesday evening, as Jurgen Klopp’s side ended a run of three successive home losses.

Philippe Coutinho has displayed the best Squawka Performance Score (574) of any Liverpool player in the Premier League this season.
