‘Jurgen Klopp will bench Philippe Coutinho for Sevilla vs Liverpool’

Former Liverpool striker John Aldridge believes that Jurgen Klopp will name Philippe Coutinho on the bench for tonight’s Champions League game at home to Sevilla.

Coutinho is back available after his proposed move to Barcelona failed to materialise but Aldridge doesn’t anticipate that the midfielder will start at Anfield.

“In midfield, there’s now the option to rest one of the midfielders and maybe bring in either Milner or Oxlade-Chamberlain for a full debut,” Aldridge told the Liverpool Echo.

“There’s also Philippe Coutinho available, of course, but I think he’ll be on the bench for this.

“The front three will be the same, and given that he’s not had a lot of football in the last month, I’d not expect him to start just yet.

“He’s more likely targeting the League Cup against Leicester for a start, but he might just be able to give us something off the bench before then.”

Coutinho has yet to play for Liverpool this season and, given that he attempted to secure a move away from the club, it will be interesting to see what reception he receives from Reds supporters should he feature.

There is little doubt, however, about Coutinho’s ability. Last season, for instance, he produced some outstanding performances – he scored 13 goals in the Premier League and created 65 chances.

Liverpool will certainly be aiming to respond following their humiliating 5-0 defeat to Manchester City last weekend, with the Reds looking to make a major impact in their first Champions League game since the 2014/15 campaign.
