Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech‘s calming presence makes him one of the best ever players in his position, Jens Lehmann has revealed.

Cech made an impressive instant impact after joining Chelsea in 2004 as he helped the Blues to win the Premier League title in each of his first two seasons at the club, and Lehmann has described the experienced goalkeeper as being a big asset for Arsenal.

Lehmann told the club’s official website: “Fortunately it wasn’t [initially] too big at Chelsea, because when he came we won the championship. In the years after, when he was 23 or 24, you could see what a great goalkeeper he was and year by year he’s improved.

“I’ve always rated him as one of the best goalkeepers ever. It’s good to see that he’s doing even better this season than last season.

“He’s calm so he calms people down, he’s got a presence. He’s a fantastic guy and a big, big benefit and asset for Arsenal now.

“He’s credible in what he says and what he does.”

Although he endured some difficult moments last season, Cech ended the campaign in fine form and made an average of 2.71 saves per game.

Cech is certainly now in the latter stages of his career but the ex-Czech Republic international will want to win the Premier League title with Arsenal before he retires.

It seems likely that Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger will persist with Cech as his first-choice goalkeeper next season but it isn’t currently clear who his back-up will be, with both David Ospina and Wojciech Szczesny having been linked with moves away from the club.

If both Ospina and Szczesny leave then Emiliano Martinez, who has made just six Premier League appearances, could be promoted to be Cech’s deputy, although that may be seen as a risky move by some.
