I admire Gerrard’s courage about trying management – Hyypia
The former Liverpool defender Sami Hyypia has spoken of his admiration for ex-teammate Steven Gerrard and his transition into management.
Gerrard ended an illustrious 16-year playing career last November and rejoined his boyhood club in an academy coaching role earlier this year.
Hyypia, who previously coached Bayer Leverkusen and Brighton & Hove Albion, commends his former teammate whilst wishing him luck.
“It doesn’t matter who you are”, he told LFC TV.
“If you don’t win football games, then you are under pressure.
“It could happen that you don’t have the position anymore after you lose a few games.
“From what I’ve experienced, I admire Steve’s courage to go down that road.
“Hopefully he will be successful.”
Hyppia’s managerial career
Hyypia, who represented the Reds between 1999 and 2000, took charge of Bayer Leverkusen in 2012 and would go on to oversee 41 matches.
During his time at Leverkusen, where he ended his playing career, Hyypia picked up 21 wins though lost 16 in the process.
After being relieved of his duties he returned to English football managing Brighton albeit briefly, taking charge of 26 matches, winning just six and losing on 10 further occasions.
His latest stint was in Switzerland managing FC Zürich for the duration of the 2015/16 season.
