Ernesto Valverde confirms Andre Gomes will stay at Barcelona despite three goals and one assist in La Liga last season
The 23-year-old midfielder has been strongly linked with a move away from the Camp Nou after an indifferent first season at the Spanish powerhouse.
Valverde, who recently succeeded Luis Enrique as Barça manager, expects Gomes as well as Ivan Rakitic to be available to him amid reports of them leaving.
“I’m counting on both players next season,” he told a press conference, as reported by Football Italia.
“For me, they’re not for sale. I’ll work with both Gomes and Rakitic.”
After coming through the respective youth teams of FC Porto and Benfica the Vila Nova de Gaia-born midfielder established himself with the Eagles of Lisbon before transferring to Valencia in the summer of 2015.
An impressive two seasons at Los Che was enough to convince Barcelona to part with £29.75m for his services but it’s fair to say he’s struggled under a new type of pressure with the 24-time La Liga winners.
Coming into a midfield that once included Xavi didn’t help as comparisons with the legendary Spanish footballer and those of that ilk were constant, though he managed to feature across 47 matches, in which he registered three goals and three assists.
Gomes, who has 25 international caps with Portugal under his belt, sees his present deal at the Camp Nou expires in 2021.
