Atletico Nacional win 2016 Fifa Fair Play Award

Colombian side Atletico Nacional have won the FIFA Fair Play Award.

Atletico Nacional were due to play Chapecoense in the final of the Copa Sudamericana in November, but tragedy struck, with the Chapecoense squad involved in a plane crash en route to the first leg of the fixture, with the disaster killing 71 people, including 19 Chapecoense players.

Subsequently Atletico Nacional requested that Chapecoense should be awarded the title in an honourable gesture.

Atletico Nacional received widespread praise for their actions, while on the day of the match the club organised a memorial to honour the victims of the tragedy.

Club chairman Juan Carlos de la Cuesta accepted the award tonight at the ceremony in Zurich.

Atletico ended the calendar year by participating at the Club World Cup, but their actions with regards to helping Chapecoense will be looked upon as one of the key instances in the club’s history.
