Arsenal chief Gazidis confirms Gunners will not sign anyone this week
Mertesacker was today ruled out for five months by Arsene Wenger as the Frenchman confirmed that his World Cup-winning defender had knee surgery after picking up the injury last week.
Injury to Mertesacker now means that the Gunners are set to start with Calum Chambers and Gabriel Paulista in their opening Premier League game of the season against Liverpool as Laurent Koscielny is yet to return from his post-Euro 2016 holiday.
Any hopes that fans had of Wenger going out and signing a replacement for Mertesacker immediately have been left disappointed, though, as Gazidis has confirmed that no one will be arriving this week.
“Well, we’ll have our new signing, Granit Xhaka, with us and, obviously, that’s a major investment for the club,” Gazidis told the New York Times. “He’s just reported for training because he was at the European Championships, and so it’s not really clear what game time he’ll get — this is literally his first week with the club.
“In terms of the squad, I think people will understand that the players that went to the latter stages of the European Championships won’t be travelling with us, but everybody else will. But it’s a strong squad and a serious part of our preseason.
“We’re still active in the market, as are most other clubs, and if we find opportunities that our manager believes can improve our squad and add something to it, we’re certainly going to take those steps. But in terms of this week, I don’t think there will be any radical surprises.”
Arsenal have been very quiet in the transfer market this summer, which is no surprise to many of the club’s supporters. Last year, Wenger only signed Petr Cech while the Frenchman has only brought in Granit Xhaka and unknown Japanese star, Takuma Asano.
Considering the Gunners were in need of top attacking quality and a strong leader in defence, they are looking weak ahead of their Premier League opener.
