Alexi Iwobi predicts Chuba Akpom will be the next Arsenal player to break into the first team
Iwobi and Akpom are close friends having progressed through the ranks together at Arsenal’s Hale End academy.
However, while Iwobi is a major part of Arsene Wenger’s plans and has made 66 first-team appearances, Akpom is still waiting for a sustained opportunity to prove his worth.
Asked who could be the next to make the breakthrough, as reported by goal, Iwobi said: “I don’t know who to expect because you never know at this time who will come through.
“But I would say Chuba Akpom.”
Although he scored with regularity at youth level for both Arsenal and England, Akpom has so far been able to take that form onto the senior stage, with the striker having scored just seven times in 79 senior appearances when all of his loan spells and his fleeting first-team outings for Arsenal are taken into consideration.
Akpom has endured much misfortune with injuries in recent seasons but is now fully fit and has been on the bench for the Arsenal first-team this season in the Europa League and the EFL Cup.
Iwobi’s choice of Akpom being the next prospect to break through is a little surprising, with Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Reiss Nelson and Joe Willock all seemingly having a better chance of establishing themselves in the team.
